Angela Martin
Professorial Research Fellow – Work & Mental Health, Menzies Institute for Medical Research
Adjunct Professor of Management, Tasmanian School of Business & Economics
MS2 , Hobart CBD Campuses
n/a (phone)
Our mental health affects our work and our experiences of work affect our mental health. Professor Angela Martin is looking at mental health in the workplace and evidence-based approaches to protecting employee wellbeing.
Workplace wellbeing
When it comes to workplace safety, minds matter as much as bodies
''My work is focussed on translating health and psychological research into practice, particularly strategies that enhance the quality of working life. This includes work-related policy, organisational strategies, management education and evaluation of interventions that aim to promote employee mental health via the workplace. It's very satisfying to contribute to contemporary conversations in society about work and well-being,' Professor Martin said.
‘My research expertise is the area generally known as occupational health psychology or industrial and organisational psychology. I'm fortunate to have been involved in several fascinating collaborations that bring together the disciplines of public health and business. National Health and Medical Research Council and Australian Research Council projects Angela has been an investigator on include ‘An integrated approach to workplace mental health in a policing context’, ‘Partnering Healthy@Work’ and ‘Business in Mind’, a workplace mental health promotion program designed for small to medium enterprise owner/managers.
Other funded projects have covered topics including the work-family interface, stress management for health professionals, bullying and firefighters, the ageing workforce, and most recently the development of core standards for mentally healthy workplaces in the public sector.
'We want people to be working longer, so the healthier they are, the better the performance and commitment to their work and their employer we can expect. As a society, we need to start considering health as a much broader concept than in a purely physical sense and recognise the work environment as a key social determinant of health,’ Professor Martin said.
'My hope is that in the near future it will be fully accepted that we look for psychological hazards in the workplace the same way we look for physical ones.'
'I think businesses have to acknowledge that creating mentally healthy organisations is an important issue; health economics work has demonstrated the costs to individuals and their families, employers and society of not managing these issues well.'
Professor Martin's work looks at factors that influence employee well-being from a macro, or labour market level, through to organisational culture, leadership, job design and supervisor and work team relationships.
'I enjoy knowing my work has a social impact and can affect people's daily lives,' she said.

- Description
- This PhD research project will for the first time assess and examine psychosocial predictors of WHS adherence on the levels of employees, team leaders, and the organisations these employees and team leaders work in. It will also for the first time examine the role of this multilevel structure in predicting individual employees' adherence to WHS requirements and take into account the role ageing and attitudes towards ageing have in explaining individual WHS behaviours. In particular, the research aims to: examine the role of theory-based psychosocial predictors of individual WHS adherence (based in particular on the Theory of Planned Behaviour and the Precaution Adoption Process Model) taking into account the multilevel structure of organisations; examine the role of matches and mismatches between employees', team leaders', and organisations' attitudes and cognitions around WHS in predicting WHS adherence; examine the role of individual attitudes towards ageing and team-level attitudes towards ageing in predicting adherence to WHS adherence.

- Description
- Depression is a common and costly occupational health problem. Workers within small-medium enterprises are especially vulnerable due to a lack of workplace health interventions. This study will rigorously evaluate a novel, multimedia-based intervention designed to enhance the psychological wellbeing of managers and their employees, and reduce their depression risk. The study will directly inform the objectives to increase mental health program access for regional small businesses.
