Associate Professor Dale Edwards is the Director of Paramedicine, and has been instrumental in the development of paramedicine as a discipline at this university.  Dale was involved in the development of each of the undergraduate and post graduate degree programs offered here, since 2006.  Dale has an extensive background in Paramedicine and Paramedic education, and has been actively involved in fostering growth in research in the discipline.

Biography

Dale has worked in the paramedic industry for more than 25 years, having worked in several Australian ambulance services, the defence forces and was involved in the early formation of an ambulance service in Vanuatu. He has experience as an Intensive Care Paramedic, and has fulfilled roles including operations manager, clinical supervisor and paramedic educator prior to coming to the university.

Dale's contributions to the profession, and the advancement of Paramedicine as a profession include roles on state and national professional boards, a past role as managing editor of the Australasian Journal of Emergency Care (discontinued) and he is currently an associate editor with the Irish Journal of Paramedicine.  Dale has also served as an expert witness in the Tasmanian Industrial Relations Commission on matters relating to the profession and paramedic education.

Dale has experience in project management, operational management of health services and more specifically ambulance services, including experience in the establishment of ambulance services in developing nations. Dale has extensive experience in curriculum design and innovation, and holds post graduate qualifications in curriculum design. He has extensive experience in the development and design of flexible delivery programs and blended learning programs for health professionals including unique student cohorts subject to isolation or challenging learning environments.

Research Themes

Dales' research interests align with the university's research theme of Better Health. He is a founding member of the Allergy and Anaphylaxis Research Group at the School of Medicine and has active projects investigating the community presentations of anaphylaxis, their clinical management and patient outcomes. His additional areas of research are clinical and health professional education, clinical Paramedicine and the safe care for paediatric patients in paramedicine.

Dale also has a strong background in research relating to paramedic education, having completed his Doctor of Education, exploring the preparedness of paramedics to be clinical preceptors.  Dale regularly participates as a team leader or team member in other education focussed research projects both nationally and internationally.

Current projects

  1. Allergy and Anaphylaxis Research Group Allergy and Anaphylaxis Research Group
    This group operates a number of active projects including an investigation into the community presentations of anaphylaxis, linkage to their hospital admission and management and associated post discharge management.  Further information regarding this group can be located on the group web page.
  2. Role Preparedness of Paramedic Preceptors
    A grounded theory study investigating the preparedness of paramedics to perform the role of clinical preceptor to paramedics in training, including university students on placement, paramedic interns and post qualification education.
  3. Child Safety in Road Ambulance Transportation
    This project investigates the transport safety aspects of transporting children in road ambulances throughout Australia.

Research Supervision

Dale has a strong track record of supervision of honours degree students in the Bachelor of Paramedic Practice (Honours) and Bachelor of Medical Research (Honours) degrees. Within the research projects outlined above there are a range of Honours and Masters minor thesis level projects available, particularly in the fields of Allergy and Anaphylaxis, Patient Safety and Health Professional Education.
