Jenn Scott

Emeritus Professor

Room 121 , Social Sciences

The aim behind Professor Jenn Scott’s research is to broaden the support base of individuals and their families dealing with chronic illnesses like cancer, dementia and multiple sclerosis. New technologies play an increasing part in this vision and are making support programs increasingly accessible and affordable.

‘The patients and their families are what motivate me,’ says Professor Scott. ‘They are my inspiration. They teach me things every day.

‘As a very young person I worked in an oncology hospital as a welfare officer. This made me realise a patient doesn’t go through an experience on their own, and that they tend to cope better if their support persons are included. But most of the medical system was set up only to deal with the patient.

‘The experience taught me that there were psychological variables as well as social variables at play when trying to adjust to a diagnosis and treatments. There’s now an understanding that helping families and the patient to cope as a team improves outcomes for both parties.’

The use of new technologies to deliver programs will mean that people don’t need to be near services but can get support online and remotely. This will be of tremendous benefit in communities where services can be scarce, distant, and expensive to access.

To this end, ‘Tasmania has some unique features in terms of socioeconomic disadvantage and isolation’ explains Professor Scott. ‘This means that if interventions designed for the island’s community are successful, they’re likely to work equally well in other remote populations in Australia and internationally.’

Psychology is on the cusp of understanding how to use new technologies to better implement interventions, not just for chronic disease but for improving adjustment to challenges in life generally. ‘My work is looking at how you harness these technologies: How do they work? Who do they work for? How cost effective and targeted can they be?’

One example is an application (app) being developed for carers of people with dementia. It contains video clips of real dementia carers (not actors) who share their experiences and demonstrate the skills that have helped them to cope. The app also increases carers’ awareness of the services available to them locally and nationally and how to access these services.

‘Technology-based interventions bring together experts from information technology and psychology in a way that allows the disciplines to build upon each other’s strengths,’ explains Professor Scott.

Professor Scott is a clinical Psychologist and Head of the discipline of psychology. She is the Director of the post graduate psychology training programs - Master of Psychology (Clinical) and Master of Professional Psychology. She has over twenty years' experience in the fields of clinical and health psychology, with a particular focus on chronic disease adjustment in patients and their families.

Research Themes

Jenn's research aligns with the University's research theme of Better Health. Her work includes assessment of health and coping behaviours, and the development of interventions to enhance adjustment to mental disorders and chronic diseases. Her focus is on translation research that informs the development of novel, cost effective evidenced based interventions (mhealth) that can be broadly disseminated in the community. Areas of particular interest include research exploring the best ways to support carers of people with illness and disability, and modes of delivery that improve program dissemination and access, such as via work place settings and the internet.

Collaboration

Jenn's work has an international impact and been translated into Italian and Greek, and informed international collaboration with replication trials in USA and Germany, including a 6-year, multi-site trail in America funded by the National Cancer Institute.Internationally Prof Scott's clinical training programs arising from her research have been delivered in professional development and training workshops for psychology, nursing and allied health professionals in chronic illness and mental health settings in USA, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and the UK.

Publications

Prof Scott's research pioneered the field of couples and families research in cancer, and inspired social-coping based interventions for patients and their support persons facing other serious illnesses. She published the first international trial results for an intervention to assist couples coping with cancer. Jenn publishes in the field of translational research that identifies modifiable predictors of health behaviours, mental health or disease adjustment.  She reviews journal articles for high ranked journals in her field (e.g., Annals of Behavioural Medicine).

Future Seas: Transforming Australia into a "Marine Knowledge Nation' (2019)$50,000
Description
We live in an age of staggering data availability, yet people around the world are becoming increasingly skeptical of science. Moreover, demands for natural resources continue to escalate and we need to manage these demands in the face of unprecedented environmental changes. Major transformations are needed to create a sustainable future for our state, region, country and the planet. A key challenge for environmental sustainability is identifying how to encourage the uptake of behaviors at individual, local and global scales - that will leverage greater environmental benefit. This proposal will examine:1.What are the key leverage points and associated processes for achieving an engaged and scientifically literate society, to underpin effective management of Australias marine resources?, and2.How can we adapt models of change that have successfully led to positive environmental behavior and stewardship in the recent past?

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) WorkSmart program: A novel online program to assist people living with MS in the workforce (2018 - 2020)$300,000
Description
Nearly half ($494M) of the total cost of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) ($1.04 billion a year) in Australia is due to sickness absence and early retirement. A large societal cost saving can be made by assisting people with MS to maintain their employment and reduce difficulties associated with their employment. Further, this will have financial benefits for people with MS, as well as improve their overall quality of life. Despite a clear need, there are currently no self-management interventions specifically for people with MS in the workforce. In this project we propose to complete the development and undertake a feasibility study of the MS WorkSmart Program. MS WorkSmart is an online cognitive behaviour therapy self-management program with telephone support accessible on different devices. MS WorkSmart guides a person with MS through six modules over 13-15 weeks, using quizzes, videos and homework activities to assist the learning of strategies that can be applied to their working and daily lives for optimal MS management. The program is being developed together with people with MS and other stakeholders using focus groups and iterative feedback. It is underpinned by cognitive behavioural theory, is embedded in the literature and specifically designed for people with MS who are in the workforce. People will be assisted with telephone-delivered psychological support.

The ageing workforce and organisational health (2013)$18,182
Description
This PhD research project will for the first time assess and examine psychosocial predictors of WHS adherence on the levels of employees, team leaders, and the organisations these employees and team leaders work in. It will also for the first time examine the role of this multilevel structure in predicting individual employees' adherence to WHS requirements and take into account the role ageing and attitudes towards ageing have in explaining individual WHS behaviours. In particular, the research aims to: examine the role of theory-based psychosocial predictors of individual WHS adherence (based in particular on the Theory of Planned Behaviour and the Precaution Adoption Process Model) taking into account the multilevel structure of organisations; examine the role of matches and mismatches between employees', team leaders', and organisations' attitudes and cognitions around WHS in predicting WHS adherence; examine the role of individual attitudes towards ageing and team-level attitudes towards ageing in predicting adherence to WHS adherence.

Promoting Employee Mental Health through the Development of Managers' Psychological Capital: A Controlled Field Experiment (2009 - 2012)$419,407
Description
Depression is a common and costly occupational health problem. Workers within small-medium enterprises are especially vulnerable due to a lack of workplace health interventions. This study will rigorously evaluate a novel, multimedia-based intervention designed to enhance the psychological wellbeing of managers and their employees, and reduce their depression risk. The study will directly inform the objectives to increase mental health program access for regional small businesses.
