- Description
- The Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC) is managing an extensive amount of data collected from the Southern Ocean. The data are collected by different agencies and in various formats. To achieve better data management, discovery useful knowledge and provide accurate decision support, AADC seeks to increase the machine-readability of its data collections to facilitate data interoperability and integration, and to improve their usability for machine learning applications. This will require annotating data collections with machine-readable metadata describing data structures and meaning, and develop an effective automated metadata management mechanism, i.e., to develop a Virtual Database (VDB). This project will focus on building on technologies developed during the previous year to implement a functioning prototype system. The work will be divided into two principal goals:1.Develop a data management module called VDB that virtually centralises the AADCs data by providing comprehensive and consistent access to data via a secure abstraction layer. This layer can further participate as an API to support extended usability and services such as Analytics and Visualisation.2.Develop an AI-assisted meta-data management (MDM) component as an extension to VDB, which will provide a high-quality user experience for metadata entry. In addition, it will provide AI-driven assistance in identifying potential text entries to generate consistent metadata entries.

- The University of Tasmania hosts one of eight Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hubs established across Australia under the Commonwealth's Future Drought Fund. Hubs are intended to be enduring institutions. The current proposal is about the Commonwealth's call to expand the Hubs' remit to service four priority areas under the National Agricultural Innovation Agenda. If funded, the Hub in Tasmania will need to operate under two agreements: the current agreement for the 'Drought Hub' and a new agreement that is about developing the Hub's pathway to expansion, while continuing to deliver to the 'Drought Hub' under the current agreement. This proposal presents the Hub's Statement of Claims on its ability and commitment to deliver practical activities and a business case that supports the National Agricultural Innovation Agenda

- Description
- Soldiers can be located in extreme environment and hazardous situations, and using VR associated with the conversation proves an extremely efficient way to train soldiers among various situations and environment, such as flight simulations, battlefield simulations, job training and etc. At present, most conversations embedded in virtual reality are typically structured interaction. This would allow conversations to take place and would be the normal method of communication. This form of conversation representation is restrictive, allowing for only a few predetermined responses to performing a few simple tasks. We can generalise these limitations in two prime categories. Firstly, lacks adaptive and dynamic conversation content. Predominantly automated conversations embedded into VR environment are driven by knowledge base (KB), which is typically developed with domain-specific requirements and assumptions that directly affect its architecture and implementation. Once knowledge base is developed it is not readily adaptable to other situations and scenarios. As the target of training keeps changing, conversations need to dynamically update. This cumbersome approach not only affects the overall efficiency of training or education but also majorly impacts the effectiveness, as the underlying engine fails to identify missing/required knowledge.Secondly a significant lack of relationship between conversational interface and knowledge. In the traditional approaches, there exists a clear separation between the knowledge and the inference of knowledge. This separation makes the knowledge generation on the fly a formidable task. Soldiers during training inevitably need to react based on conversation contents, so it should include behavioral abstractions rather than only information abstraction using natural language to impart their knowledge and train them in a highly effectual, seamless, efficient manner. These limitations provide an opportunity which motivates us to develop the next generation of conversation engine that is a cohesive unit of intelligent CLT (Control Language Interface) with assisted rule-based technology and adaptability at its core. The design of this conversation engine is intended to effectively identify the required knowledge for the soldiers while interacting and develop a broader range of contents with an agile delivery mechanism that can cater a wider scope defense situations and environment. We propose our approach that specifically addresses the above-mentioned limitations by targeting the following: 1.Identification of the missing/required knowledge of soldiers during VR military training to achieve personalized training. 2.Generation of interactive conversations based on multiple VR situations and environment. In our system, the interactive conversations will be dynamically changed and adaptive to various VR situations and environment. This unique and novel concept will enable the soldiers to invoke live knowledge generation during training as he/she explores additional information with experiences. Moreover, it will enhance and expand the core knowledge engine, by a wider range of contexts and their inter-matching connectivity to establish conversational flow in various domains of knowledge.

- Genomic selection is a new applied breeding technology that is being used in commercial animal and plant breeding programwith significant, and times large, economic benefits. However, there are no commercial applications in oyster breeding. Genomic selection requiressignificant increase in costs due to the need to genotyping large numbers of individuals, and there are technical and logistical challenges in applying thitechnology to oyster breeding. This project is a preliminary step intended to demonstrate an economic cost benefit, evaluate genotyping toolsmethodology development, proof of conceptfor phenotyping, thereby providing information to assist a decision aboutmoving thisto operational breeding

- he Chemical Criminalistics (CC) team at the Australian Federal Police (AFP) performs a range of examinations on chemical trace evidence to support numerous internal and external stakeholders. In addition to the traditional laboratory capabilities (using benchtop instruments), CC also provides a deployable capability, including portable identification instruments and a mobile laboratory. This function can be deployed locally, nationally and internationally and is particularly critical in the field of explosives analysis. Rapid deployments are often required in support of counter terrorism operations, where the CC team is able to conduct trace organic and trace inorganic explosive detection outside of the laboratory environment. The CC team acquired x2 GreyScan ETD-100 units in late 2019. The UTAS-based and Australian manufactured ETD-100 is the world's first automated explosive trace detection device designed to detect inorganic explosives based on nitrates, chlorates and perchlorates. The ETD-100 was designed to complement the current security screening technology at points-of entry such as airport checkpoints and aviation cargo screening. The CC team have undertaken an extensive validation of the ETD-100 and established a number of limitations in its current (security screening) end-user form. During the validation process, the CC team established that it was possible to adopt this new technology and make it more relevant to AFP forensic operations. In particular, it is possible to interface the ETD-100 with a laptop utilising a customised Laboratory User Interface. In this mode, the analyst is able to interrogate the data coming off the box to allow a more informed decision to be made (other than just the current PASS or WARNING screens). Further development is required to the interface to provide the analyst with the ability to detect and identify other relevant analytes of forensic interest other than the three currently programmed explosive ingredient targets (namely: nitrates, chlorates, perchlorates), which will be developed in this project. This enhanced capability is considered critical when undertaking chemical exploitation in support of the frontline response to explosive incidents and intelligence-led disruptions.

- Water is a major asset for Tasmania linked to livelihoods, energy production, irrigated and rainfed agriculture, environmental management and conservation. Competing demands forwater intensify during droughts and as hot and dry years increase in number. Wise and fair water management requires a multi-stakeholder partnership to innovate for droughtresilience, optimal water management and self-reliance. Our Hub will enable drought preparedness in Tasmania through collective and co-designed actions that sustain Tasmania'shigh-value, clean, green international brand. We will engage with local knowledge and land stewardship through a deliberate and negotiated process and uphold the rights ofTasmanian Aboriginal people to benefit from innovations they enable. The Hub, for the first time, brings together the major players - farmers, land and water managers, researchers, and indigenous knowledge owners - who, together can reduce the risks associated with drought in Tasmania.

- Description
- Road networks play a crucial role in socioeconomic and regional development. Due to the rapid development of automobile manufacturing in the 20th century, individual transportation became available to the masses, as a result, the road networks experienced a rapid increase in usage. To assure ride safety the road networks need to be maintained at a desirable level. To maintain at a desirable level, roads are monitored by surveyors to capture the longitudinal and transverse profiles, and the condition of surface and edges. If detected, surface defects are assessed and if possible are either addressed on the spot or are assigned a priority rating for repair work. Clearly, such manual surveys are inherently inefficient, laborious and time-consuming.Therefore, there is need for a low cost road surface defect detection system that will be used frequently for not only the highways but also for the remaining part of the road network that often remains unattended due to high cost of the current solutions. The aim of this project is to develop an automated data collection and defect detection system for paved roads that has a low purchase, maintenance and operational cost.

These technologies have been identified by growers and endorsed by CRC partners, they include; * The 'Smart' Shovel: integration of moisture and compaction sensors into a shovel design with auto mapping procedures to enable growers to visualize spatial variations in soil properties using a hand held device * Below Ground Data Transmission, to wirelessly send data from completely sensors thus avoiding issues with infield equipment, stock and vehicle damage, using low power wide area telecommunications (i.e. LoRa). * Self-learning moisture sensors, using machine learning we will develop the ability to determine the soil water limits and APSIM soil parameters from existing soil moisture sensors. The project is a strategic collaboration between TIA, SenseT and ICt to built Agtech research and development capacity in UTAS.

- Description
- On 18 August 2017, a new world class $5 million autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) capable of diving into the deep ocean (5000 meters) to gather data on Antarctic research missions was unveiled at the University of Tasmania's Australian Maritime College (AMC). This project aims to develop intelligent methods to allow the AUV to navigate long distances in environments (such as Antarctic and Southern Ocean) where underwater/under-ice absolute navigation aid (GPS) is not available.Geophysical referencing allows an AUV to position itself using sensory feedback. An effective geophysical approach is teach-and-repeat (TR) path following, which does not require the estimation of position in the global reference frame, but only with respect to previously collected data. TR enables an autonomous vehicle to re-follow a path by relating its current sensory input to a stored sequence of sensory input from a previous traversal. This approach is beneficial to both AUV homing operation and area coverage mission. The objectives of the project are to develop an effective TR path following algorithm for AUV by online sonar image processing (including image recognition and matching), and to design a reliable path following control algorithm which will compensate for the ocean current disturbance on AUV motion.

- The objective of this project is to build robust skills capacity in highschools, Universities and small businesses. It is about leveragingexisting practical initiatives to build capacity in analysing andunderstanding data for every-day decision making. Schools are alreadyinitiating ideas on how to tap into the Sense-T opportunity, includingBurnie High School in North-West Tasmania. The school has proposedcreating a program for Years 9-10 students on building sensors andapplications to monitor the local environment. This project will createa series of courses and activities to support learning in sensortechnology and big data analytics.

- Description
- Knowledge-based systems are typically constrained by their ability to acquire new knowledge without the intercession of a technical knowledge engineer. This introduces a fundamental disconnect between the system and the domain expert - even if a knowledge acquisition interface is provided, the domain expert is usually highly constrained in their expressiveness and ability to train the system due to technology-specific implementation.Knowledge-based systems are also currently limited in their applicability to autonomous systems. The domain expert/knowledge acquisition bottleneck in this paradigm also poses a great challenge to effectively train an autonomous system with new or modified behaviours without considerable effort and implementation change. In the autonomous system-operating environment, there is no consistent model of abstraction (of services/behaviour, information and data) that can be leveraged across different systems and domains. To address these shortcomings, we will develop an extensive, easily maintainable hierarchical Knowledge Base System (KBS) for Autonomous Systems (AS) technologies (such as drones and humanoid robots) that will be trained by Knowledge Domain Experts (KDE) using a Natural Language (NL) interface for communication. The system will implement an abstracted architecture, taking a layer-based approach to separate data and hardware, information, and services, each with an associated, contextual knowledge base. We will introduce and develop a module (termed a Curator) that will facilitate the choice (or procurement via knowledge acquisition) of behavioural and information abstractions at each layer. This will allow the AS to infer correct behaviour given high-layer service directives, in effect allowing the KDE to train a behaviour quickly and effectively when the associated contextual knowledge base lacks the knowledge to fulfil an inter-layer request.

- Description
- This cross disciplinary research project is a strategic research project lead by the School of Engineering and ICT in collaboration with the CSIRO Data61 (formerly called the CSIRO ICT Centre). The project focuses on remote operation of mechatronic systems that are highly localised in their sensor reach, but may nevertheless be remote from users. Research in the project addresses: leveraging commercial off the shelf (COTS) sensor systems and platforms to provide cognitive integration of human-machine systems and to enhance human use of increasing amounts of sensor data collected in ways that are highly adaptive to the goals and purposes of the human user. This project aligns with the strategic Research Themes and objectives of the SenseT project, but seeks a much tighter integration between human thought and problem-solving processes and the remote operation of mechatronic systems in providing sensor and data inputs to those processes. This will be done by demonstrating new forms of interface, interaction, and semi-autonomous machine control for supporting human problem formulation and solution, integrated with real-time mechatronic systems gathering problem-oriented data remotely from the end point of human use. Hence the project will demonstrate real-time physically adaptive big data systems for human decision support.

- We have previously developed a successful knowledge base system using Induct RDR that classifies phishing-related intrusion attempts by examining attribute-based data associated with target (suspect and non-suspect) web sites. The system's purpose is to filter out phishing - it classifies data into two categories of phishing-related or not-phishing-related categories. This categorisation can then be used by a filtering or an alert system to mitigate the risk to an end user.

- This project creates a system of 'live knowledge' management that integrates human observations of grape production with sensor-derived intelligence to constantly improve the quality and accuracy of variables predicting crop stages or those associated with grape yield and quality. The system will support better decision making by vineyard managers and winemakers about crop interventions and winery logistics. Not only will this tool strengthen the functionality of the Sense-T Stage 1 viticulture app, it will also facilitate users to collaborate and share data and knowledge for constructive advantage and entrepreneurship. This value-adding will promote technology adoption and sustainable expansion of the Tasmanian wine and grape industry.

- This project will consist of collating existing; spatial data, sensor technology, and irrigation software (developed by NCEA) to deliver a working irrigation management tool. A simple to use mobile App using real-time sensory data to assist growers to decide when and how much to irrigate different soils or crops, tailored to their irrigation control system and site characteristics. Part of the project will undertake a review and evaluation of the use of sensors; what functionality is needed; and how decision making occurs with end users. The growers have indicated there is a need for a review to inform them of the sensors to use in their individual businesses. They are also need information on the best location of sensors and the optimal number of sensors required to provide reliable information and management zones within an irrigation area. One of the key objectives of the spatial data component of the project will be to determine the appropriate scale of mapping to match management zones.

- Knowledge is essential for human life. Using it,we can make better decisions and thus perform correct actions. Therefore, it is important to manage it in appropriate manners. This paper presents a platform for knowledge service, whichprovides actionable live heuristic knowledge to the users. Theplatform consists of three layers - data, information andknowledge. In order to provide live knowledge service, all theselayers require experiential knowledge, but they have not beenwell understood or well managed in conventional knowledgeservice approaches. Experiential knowledge is used to selectbetter data analytic approaches, better transform from data toinformation and to provide decision services to users. Theheuristic knowledge used in three layers is related to eachother and should be managed seamlessly and maintainedincrementally by experts in domains.
