Doctor Van Dam conducts research in the field of health service improvement, leadership, and health curriculum and pedagogy, and he teaches in the disciplines of translational research and healthcare redesign. Dr Van Dam has received numerous awards for his work in health service improvement.  In 2017, 2018 and 2019 he received teaching merit certificates in recognition of a meritorious contribution to the teaching programs of the University of Tasmania.  In 2019 he received a Citation for leadership and innovation in creating Australia’s first tertiary Clinical Redesign Course that has influenced learning and teaching, contributing to sustainable healthcare. In 2018, he received together with the Agency for Clinical Innovation the Bond University National Sustainable Healthcare Award for increasing understanding in students of sustainable health.

Biography

Doctor Pieter Van Dam completed his PhD in Leadership Development in 2015. During the last ten years Dr Van Dam’s career has been focussed on the field of health service improvement and (clinical) leadership development. Dr Van Dam has an extensive clinical and educational background in Nursing and healthcare and has worked as a senior clinician and manager in the acute healthcare sector. In 2009 - 2011 he led innovation and redesign work in the Tasmanian Health Service involving the development, implementation and evaluation of a patient assessment and referral system and an electronic care planning system. Dr  Van Dam works closely with the New South Wales Agency for Clinical Innovation (ACI) and  New Zealand’s Ko Awatea on a number of national health service improvement and codesign initiatives, addressing numerous constraints and issues inherent in health service delivery across primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare, such as protracted wait times, care coordination and integration, access and referral across services, and timely treatment and discharge. Currently, Dr Van Dam works for the Tasmanian School of Medicine at the University of Tasmania and is Director of Healthcare Redesign.

Teaching expertise

Dr Van Dam has extensive experience in learning and teaching. He has been teaching since 2004, firstly in nursing, and later in leadership and health service improvement. This is summarised below:

  • Co-ordinating the Graduate Trainee Program and the Management and Leadership Development Course. Facilitation, delivery and refinement of the Management and Leadership Development Course.
  • Co-ordinating Professional Honours (Clinical Redesign) course. Development of short courses in Clinical Redesign/Health Services Improvement and Change Management within a blended-learning environment. Delivery and facilitation of courses and workshops. Delivery of lectures, Change Management and Health Services Improvement for health students (Nursing, Medicine and Allied Health).

Teaching responsibility

Dr Van Dam is responsible for the co-ordination of the Bachelor of Healthcare with Professional Honours (Clinical Redesign) and has teaching responsibility for CAM554 Clinical Redesign and CAM538 Translational Research and Health Service Innovation.

Dr Van Dam co-ordinates the Doctor of Health (M9G) in the School of Medicine.

Expertise

Dr Van Dam has extensive experience in using qualitative research methods, and in particular, in Grounded Theory and Mixed Methods. Dr Van Dam's research is focussed on Leadership Development, Health Service Improvement and education. Dr Van Dam has been co-investigating the evaluation of a senior/executive health leadership program (Building and Leading a High Performance Culture), utilising a mixed-methods approach. Co-investigating a research project exploring the organisational culture of a large hospital, while validating the Cultural Health Check Tool.  Chief Investigator on the study: Exploring change in participants’ behaviours after completion of the DHHS Management and Leadership Foundation Program. Co- Investigator on the study: Exploring management and leadership theory and practice in Tasmanian Health and Human Services.

Research Themes

Pieter’s research aligns with the Faculty of Health's research theme of Healthcare and Support Services, focussing on clinical redesign, leadership, delivery and evaluation of models of healthcare. Pieter’s research has extended to working with Teeside University, validating the Cultural Health Check Toolkit, by using it in a Tasmanian context. Teesside University’s Cultural Health Check Toolkit was developed to measure the culture and caring environment, by seeking the views and opinions of healthcare professionals, patients, and organisations in the provision of safe, compassionate and dignified care.

Collaboration

Doctor Van Dam is currently involved in an international project in the United kingdom examining the association between influenza vaccine administration and primary care consultations for influenza like illness and acute respiratory tract infection.

Awards

International Excellence in Health Improvement Award (finalist) 2016 for promoting Clinical Research and Application in Practice.
