Book 'Tasmanian ANZACS; Tasmanian Soldiers and World War One' (2014)$4,620
Description
In his unpublished memoirs, The Silver King, 47th Battalion Private Denver Gallwey from Queensland thought that the 'pale faced looking boys' from Tasmania 'would not be up to the same strains as the big brown Queenslanders'. This idea that Tasmanian soldiers were not made of the right stuff to survive the rigours of war deserves closer examination. Tasmanian ANZACs will examine the experience of Tasmanian soldiers during World War One from the time that they enlisted to their return to Tasmania, mainly focusing on infantry battalions in which they served (12th, 15th, 26th, 40th, 47th and 52nd), but also examining contributions in other roles, their experience as POWs, how they were commemorated and how they coped with return to civilian society. This will be a total history of Tasmanian soldiers based on extensive use of unpublished diaries, letters and memoirs..
