Dr. Saurabh Garg is a lecturer at the University of Tasmania, Hobart, Tasmania. He is one of the few Ph.D. students who completed in less than three years from the University of Melbourne in 2010. He has published more than 30 papers in highly cited journals and conferences with H-index 24. His doctoral thesis focused on devising novel and innovative market-oriented meta-scheduling mechanisms for distributed systems under conditions of concurrent and conflicting resource demand. He has gained about three years of experience in the Industrial Research while working at IBM Research Australia and India. His area of interests are Distributed Computing, Cloud Computing, HPC, IOT, BigData analytics, and education analytics.

Biography

Before joining the University of Tasmania, Saurabh was a post-doctoral research fellow at IBM Research Australia and University of Melbourne. He completed his PhD thesis from the University of Melbourne and masters thesis from the Indian Institute of Technology.

Research Themes

Saurabh’s research aligns most closely to the University’s research theme of Data, Knowledge and Decisions. His interest includes big-data analytics and computational distributed platforms that can enable real time decision making. He has also worked in developing resource management techniques to improve carbon foot prints of Cloud computing data centers which are used extensively by businesses. He is currently working in developing analytical models and software platforms for (a) large scale Environmental Health monitoring through Bird Acoustics, (b) Bushfire analysis in real time, (c) real-time data analysis in IoT and (d) reducing  inefficiencies in current university system and improving T&L through Big Data analysis.

'Big Data' and learning analytics for Australian higher education: second stage of pilot project (2018)$11,132
Description
The primary aim of this prospective project is to examine university lecturers and tutors' pedagogical approaches and student engagement in online learning, through the use of Big Data and learning analytics, using UTAS as a starting point. In this project, emerging analytic techniques and skills (e.g. R & Python) will be adopted to analyse archived data from MyLO, including: online discussions, lecturer feedback, news . items, unit materials/resources, and student engagement statistics generated by MyLO analytics. This proposed project examines correlations between student engagement and participation and the following factors: 1.lecturers' and tutors' pedagogical support;2.student interactions with the lecturer, tutors and peers;3.types of teaching materials/resources uploaded; and4.student results and evaluation.Big Data indicates "large pools of data that can be captured, communicated, aggregated, stored, and analysed" (Manyika et al., 2011, p.4). Big Data analytics analyses the flow of information, and thereby, reveals hidden threads, trends and patterns in the data (Matteson, 2013). Therefore, it is relevant to all organisations, including higher education institutions, that produce large data sets, and wish to benefit from the interpretation of these data.In recent years, there has been an increase in the use of Big Data analytics for educational purposes, driven and facilitated by various reasons, one of which is the pressure faced by educational institutions towards performance management and student retention (Beer, 2010). One most common form of Big Data analytics in higher education is learning analytics. Learning analytics applications enable institutions to build predictive models on student outcomes, especially to identify at-risk students and to provide early warnings so that interventions can be made (Rienties et al., 2016). The proposed project, is the second stage of a frontier research to explore the use of Big Data and learning analytics to identify such patterns for higher education.

A Machine Learning Approach for Predicting the Locations of Tasmanian Threatened Plant Species (2018)$9,007
Description
This project develops Machine Learning models for predicting the locations of Tasmanian threatened plant species.Biodiversity (the variety of life at community, species and genotype scales) functions within ecosystems that supply oxygen, clean air and water, pollination of plants, pest control, and many other ecosystem services. It merits conservation in itself, as recognised in international treaties. Mapping of the areas that are most important to maintain the variety of life is therefore critical in land use planning and land management. Such mapping rests on distributional knowledge of the elements of biodiversity.

Engaging Citizen Scientists to Identify Bird Species from Audio Recordings (2018)$4,000
Description
Conservation efforts for large ecosystems require monitoring in order to determine how well they are working. In particular, terrestrial ecosystems such as production forests, which are heavily regulated for conservation, require detailed monitoring in order to fulfil federal requirements of the sustainable production of wood - DAFF 2008 policy Australias Sustainable Forest Management Framework of Criteria and Indicators: Criterion 1. Conservation of biological diversity; and Criterion 3. Maintenance of ecosystem health and vitality speak specifically to the need for cheap and reliable monitoring methods.Since bird populations are a well recognised key indicator of ecosystem health we are leveraging long-term environmental audio recordings of forests under conservation management in order to assess biodiversity and ecosystem health. Such acoustic data need to be annotated with which bird species are present, before ecological research can be done, but engaging experts to perform annotation at these scales is prohibitively expensive and time-consuming. This is a pattern recognition task that has proven difficult to automate, but humans are naturally well equipped to perform. Since there are many enthusiastic amateur birdwatchers, crowd-sourcing may be a solution.The application of crowd-sourcing to the task of bird recognition will involve recruiting citizen scientists to use our custom made annotation web application Birdsong (https://tasbirdsong.duckdns.org/). In image annotation for example, combining multiple overlapping non-expert annotations (e.g., by majority vote) has been shown to be comparable to expert annotations. We will investigate to what degree the idea of Wisdom of the Crowd applies to annotation of ecological field recordings.To the best of our knowledge there are no active efforts to crowd-source bird call recognition, or any research published on bird call annotation/annotator quality or how learning affects bird call recognition in citizen scientists.What we learn from this pilot project will guide us in how to recruit, train and retain citizen scientists. It will produce valuable annotations and meta-data for research in the fields of ecology, human cognition, and machine learning and statistics. Further, it will inform future research efforts towards community involvement in conservation research and the efficient production of annotated data for ecological monitoring.

Dr Garg has successfully supervised one PhD student during his post-doctoral research at the University of Melbourne in the area of “SLA-based Resource Provisioning for Management of Cloud-based Software-as-a-Service Applications”. Currently, he is co-supervising 5 PhD student in the area of Data analytics, Cloud Computing, Big Data workflows, IoT and Fog Computing.
