Christine Crawford
Senior Research Fellow
IMAS Taroona , Off-Campus
Dr Christine Crawford is a Senior Research Fellow within IMAS Fisheries and Aquaculture Centre, with over thirty years' experience in aquaculture and environmental research, both in Australia and overseas. She led the Marine Environment (later Natural Resource Management) Section at TAFI and has been involved in a many research projects involved in the interaction between human activities and the estuarine environment. She has received the Vice-Chancellors Award for outstanding community engagement and has participated in various state and national committees on marine environmental issues. Currently Dr Crawford's research is concentrated on proving environmental information to support the management of the Tasmanian salmon and oyster aquaculture industries.
Biography
Dr
Christine Crawford's early career research concentrated on aquaculture
development, including the development of the Pacific oyster and salmon
aquaculture industries in Tasmania, and the culture of giant clams in the Pacific
Island region. She was the Researcher in Charge (Aquaculture) for the Tasmanian
Government, before moving into environmental related issues, initially the
carrying capacity of oyster growing areas, followed by environmental monitoring
and management of salmon farms. Christine then led the Marine Environment
(later Natural Resource Management) section at TAFI and secured funding for a
variety of marine environmental issues, including developing monitoring
programs and baseline data collection for many small estuaries around Tasmania,
habitat mapping and the role of environmental flows into estuaries. She has
also developed strong links with community groups to encourage their
participation in natural resource management. Dr Crawford has published
widely, including 38 papers in the international peer-reviewed literature, 6
book chapters, book co-editor and over a hundred reports to industry and
government.
Her current research interests are centred around the effects of human
activities on estuarine and inshore coastal environments.
- Effects of catchment-based activities on the health of estuaries and coastal waters.
- Interactions between aquaculture and the environment, including monitoring around salmon farms and environmental factors involved in on-farm oyster mortalities.
- Effects of changing climatic conditions and water currents in SE Tasmania on primary and secondary productivity.
- The loss and potential recovery of a key estuarine and coastal habitat formed by native oyster (Ostrea angasi) reefs in Tasmania.
Factors affecting growth and condition of farmed Pacific oysters and using biotags to monitor oyster wellbeing.

- Effect of Human Activities on the Health of Estuaries
- Developing Water Quality Objectives and Targets for Estuaries and Marine Waters
- Restoration of native oyster reef habitat in Tasmania
- Interactions between cultured Pacific oysters and the environment
Research Themes
Christine's research aligns to the University's research theme of Environment, Resources and Sustainability. Her research interests include understanding the interactions between salmon and shellfish aquaculture and the environment, and providing environmental information to support management of these industries. This has included monitoring environmental conditions such as intertidal algae around salmon farms and collecting baseline water quality data. She has also investigated the effects of land-based activities, especially agricultural outputs, on downstream estuaries and coastal waters. A study of the value of water across a catchment and the importance of environmental flows to estuarine health and productivity is an example. She has also led several projects collecting baseline data and developing monitoring programs to assess the condition of smaller estuaries around Tasmania.

- Description
- IMAS and CSIRO will work together to further progress research begun under Sense-T's Stage 1 Aquaculture project. Three Pacific oyster growing areas across Tasmania (Pittwater, Moulting Bay and Duck Bay) will be fitted with a network of biosensors on individual oysters for research on the connection between variables such as oyster heart-rate and production, as well as environmental sensors. The data collected on the health of oysters and on-farm conditions will inform real-time decision-making on production and help the industry to become more competitive, efficient and sustainable.

Research Supervision
Christine has supervised Masters and PhD students, mostly on topics related to monitoring and managing the health of estuaries in Tasmania. Other studies have been on the ecology of specific coastal water fauna, including moon jellyfish and the New Zealand screw shell. She is currently planning PhD projects focusing on remnant native oyster reefs, the ecosystem services that they provide and scientific information related to fishing and aquaculture of this species.
