Dr Juan José Dorantes-Aranda is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies. He studies harmful algal blooms that cause economic impacts on fish farming industry, and he also has collaborations studying marine toxic organisms, such as jellyfish and sea anemones.


Juan José studied Oceanography (Autonomous University of Baja California, Mexico) and earned a Masters in Marine Sciences (National Autonomous University of Mexico, campus Mazatlan) with a focus in harmful algal blooms. He worked as a technician at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (campus Sisal). He migrated to Australia and completed a PhD at IMAS-UTAS in 2012. He worked as a research assistant at the University of New South Wales for six months, after which he returned to Mexico to perform postdoctoral studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (campus Puerto Morelos). He re-joined IMAS-UTAS as a postdoctoral research fellow in September 2013.

Juan José has collaborated in teaching the subject  of Marine Biology in the postgraduate program in Marine Sciences by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (campus Puerto Morelos). He also was part of a teaching program for college students where weekly practical classes in Ecology were instructed.

Research Themes

Juan José's research aligns to the University's research theme of Marine, Antarctic and Maritime. His research focuses on the toxicology of algal blooms, including mostly microalgal species affecting the fish-farming industry. He developed an in vitro assay using fish gill cells to assess the toxicity of microalgae and their purified toxins. He has experience in applying biochemical tests in fish cells and organs as part of the toxicological screening, as well as quantifying reactive oxygen species in microalgae as a suspected factor in ichthyotoxicity. This has given him the chance to collaborate with other institutions such as the University of Maryland (USA), the University of Technology, Sydney, and the University of Melbourne, where the use of the in vitro fish cell assay has widened and it has also been employed to measure the toxicity of other marine organisms including jellyfish and sea anemones. He is currently working in adapting paralytic shellfish toxin detection kits for Australian blooms.


Juan José has been involved in collaborations with the University of Maryland (USA) testing toxins from a fish-killing dinoflagellate. He is currently working in collaboration with the University of Technology, Sydney testing different algal toxins, as well as with the University of Melbourne studying the effects of highly toxic jellyfish species.
