Dr Sebastien Moreau Is a postdoctoral research scientist at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS). He studies the biogeochemical cycle of carbon in the Southern Ocean, from frontal jets and eddies to the sea ice zone.


Before joining the University of Tasmania, Sébastien was a Postdoctoral fellow at the University catholic of Louvain (Belgium), following his PHD in Oceanography at the Institut des sciences de la mer de Rimouski (ISMER), Rimouski, Canada.

Sebastien Moreau is a postdoctoral research scientist at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), Hobart, Australia. He studies the biogeochemistry of the Southern Ocean, with a particular interest in primary productivity and more broadly about the organic and inorganic carbon cycle. He has a geographically wide interest of the Southern Ocean, from frontal jets and eddies, the high-nutrients low-chlorophyll regions, the sea ice covered areas, to the more coastal domain, including polynyas, and sea ice.

Research Themes

Sebastien’s research aligns to the University’s research theme of Marine, Antarctic and Maritime.His research interests include sea ice biogeochemistry, particularly inorganic and organic carbon and nutrients. Notably, Sebastien has developed a biogeochemical model that represents the inorganic carbon cycle in sea ice, including CaCO3 precipitation and ice-air CO2 fluxes. His research is also on the role of sea ice in the Southern Ocean carbon cycle. For instance, Sebastien has shown that, because of climate change, the retreat of sea ice from the Bellingshausen Sea enhances the annual primary production. More recently, Sebastien has started to study the role of fronts and eddies on the Southern Ocean carbon cycle.


Sebastien Moreau collaborates with national and international research centres spanning across the field of glaciology and oceanography.
