Dr Gemma Blackwood is a Lecturer in Media. Gemma researches screen cultures, digital media and visual cultural theory.
Biography
Before joining the University of Tasmania in 2019, Gemma was a Media Communications lecturer at Charles Darwin University (2013-2019) in Darwin and a lecturer in Screen and Media Communications at The University of Melbourne (2012-2013).

Gemma served as the Northern Territory representative of the Cultural Studies Association of Australasia from 2013-2018. She is currently an editorial board member of Australian Humanities Review.

Gemma currently teaches media and communications in the undergraduate and postgraduate Media School programmes. At Charles Darwin University (CDU) she taught primarily in the areas of media theory, journalism and professional writing. At CDU she was also the Course Coordinator of the Bachelor of Creative Arts and Industries.

Research Themes
Gemma’s research aligns to the University’s research themes of Creativity, Culture and Society and Environment, Resources and Sustainability. Research interests include understanding western and non-western perspectives of visual cultures; screen cultures and their connections to touristic and spatial theories; film and television policy; and cultural geography mapped through screen cultures and digital media. Gemma has also researched northern Australian and outback representations in film and television and how they help to construct national identities.
Awards
In 2018, Gemma was an inaugural recipient of the ABC Top 5 Humanities Researchers prize.
