An experienced Clinician in the fields of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedicine, Dr Belinda Flanagan is also a dedicated and experienced Lecturer/ Researcher. Experienced Manager of healthcare education multimode delivery, with a complete suite of managerial responsibilities. Contributor to healthcare delivery and education of both skilled and unskilled healthcare workers in low-income countries and a provider of point of care injury management in remote land and marine environments.

Biography

Belinda began her career as a Registered Nurse in NSW before becoming a Paramedic with the NSW Ambulance Service in 1994. In 1997, she moved to Queensland and began working with the Queensland Ambulance Service until 2017. In 2009, she began teaching in higher education while maintain her clinical currency, she is a recognised Senior Fellow and mentor of the Higher Education Academy, UK. Before joining the University of Tasmania, she was an academic at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Qld. Belinda has experience teaching across nursing, midwifery and paramedicine in both the undergraduate and postgraduate space.

Outside the university Belinda engages in humanitarian work with non-governmental organisations in low-income countries. She has worked in Nepal, Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea in public health and primary healthcare. She has more recently worked as an Evaluations Manager with Australian Doctors International. This included collaborating with provincial healthcare services to monitor public health campaigns in response to Covid-19 and resourcing remote healthcare services, in addition to delivering staff education in Infection Control, Covid testing and vaccine delivery, Family Planning and Obstetric Emergencies.

Teaching expertise

Dr Flanagan is experienced in teaching across Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedicine in both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Belinda has led paramedicine programs as Acting Discipline Lead and Program Lead prior to becoming the Program Director at UTAS. Her areas of expertise are in paramedic professional practice, obstetrics and neonatal care, paediatrics, clinical decision making and patient assessment.

Dr Flanagan is a registered HDR Supervisor with current students at both UTAS and other Australian universities. She currently supervises at PhD and master’s level in the disciplines of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedicine. Belinda has students interested in exploring the patient experience, clinical decision making, referral pathways in clinical practice and research that includes learning and teaching and the student experience.
