Dr Costan Magnussen is a Heart Foundation Future Leader Fellow at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research. His primary research interest is in the early life origin of cardiometabolic diseases.

Biography

Costan has a joint appointment as adjunct professor of cardiovascular epidemiology at the University of Turku, Finland. He completed his undergraduate training and PhD at the University of Tasmania, before taking postdoctoral positions at the Research Centre of Applied and Preventive Cardiovascular Medicine, University of Turku, Finland and Murdoch Childrens Research Institute in Melbourne.

Collaboration

During his PhD and postdoctoral periods, Costan played an instrumental role in the establishment of a major international (three country, seven study) consortium examining the childhood origins of adult cardiovascular disease (International Childhood Cardiovascular Cohort (i3C) Consortium). The i3C Consortium involves researchers from Finland, the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia.

Exposure to passive smoke in Tasmanian children: determinants, outcomes and changes over time (2018)$24,620
Description
There are two unique datasets available within Tasmania that provide us with an opportunity be better understand the causes and consequences of passive smoking among children the Tasmanian Infant Health Study (TIHS) and the Conception to Community (C2C) study. The TIHS began in the late 1980s to investigate the causes of sudden infant death syndrome. The study involved recruitment of mothers while they were pregnant gathering extensive data on passive smoke exposure from mothers and fathers. The babies that were born in this study have been followed up several times during their life and are now aged 27 years. The C2C study includes all births among Tasmanian women from 2008 to 2014 with an expected total number of participants being more than 35,000. This study uses data linkage of health and other administrative records from mothers and babies from gestation through to early life providing a comprehensive picture of health and development. These two datasets offer a unique opportunity to examine passive smoke exposure among Tasmanian infants and children including prevalence of exposure, changes in exposure and health effects of exposure. This project will analyse data from these project to address gaps in our understanding of passive smoke exposure in children.

Cardiometabolic risk trajectories from childhood to midlife: finding pathways to better health (2017 - 2020)$1,531,986
Description
Using data from a large cohort of Australian children followed for over 30 years, this study will investigate how weight status and physical fitness from childhood to adulthood determine early markers of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes (cardiometabolic disease) in midlife. It will provide much needed evidence to address the high prevalence of cardiometabolic disease risk factors in young Australians through better targeted disease prevention and early clinical intervention strategies.

Understanding the early-life pathways for adult type 2 diabetes using existing data from seven cohorts of the International Childhood Cardiovascular Cohort (i3C) Consortium (2016 - 2017)$336,419
Description
Type 2 diabetes remains a major contributor to health care costs in Australia and worldwide with the burden expected to escalate rapidly in coming decades. Children, adolescents, and young adults have experienced the most rapid growth in incident diabetes. Therefore, these groups appear to be least responsive to current strategies to reduce or constrain the disease burden. There are epidemiologic reasons, such as the more recent increase in obesity, particularly in the young, to suspect that the movement in disease burden in these groups will continue to trend upwards. Already it appears that this generation may have a shorter life expectancy than their parents the first such in Australian history. To address these unnerving trends, we need to better understand who is at risk and the early-life pathways that lead to an increased risk. Exploiting a unique and existing data resource that our New Investigator Team has been instrumental in developing, the International Childhood Cardiovascular Cohort (i3C) Consortium that involves collective follow-up of >10000 children until adulthood, we aim to examine the contribution of child and adolescent risk factors and risk factor trajectories across the early life-course that lead to type 2 diabetes. The rich data available from this cohort will provide a unique opportunity to answer important questions concerning the factors, using a life-course approach, that lead to later health outcomes. Unlike corrective efforts made later in life, by focusing on early-life this project will help identify periods during the plastic phases of development where timely intervention or prevention might lead to improved lifelong metabolic health trajectories. By harnessing and extending an already existing data resource, this project represents a cost-effective and unprecedented opportunity to address our study aims.
