Music connects and binds humanity together. It removes isolation, and enables people to dream, and to express those dreams. Music is pure creativity and spirituality, and brings people together in community.
Understanding the power of gospel music
Associate Professor Andrew Legg is an internationally recognised musician and researcher. He is examining the effects and impact of African American gospel and sacred music on the development of Australian music and culture. His work seeks to increase our understanding of gospel music's power as a tool for communication, collaboration and the building of communities.
'African American music speaks to freedom, justice and the strength of community. It is about hope, justice and equality. It profoundly resonates with isolated and oppressed minorities across the globe,' said Associate Professor Legg.
'In African American culture, people connect through music. It is intergenerational and eternal, transmitting cultural values and stories from the past to the present. It unites people, reinforcing a sense of belonging to something bigger and more important than the individual. They 'sing' their theology, their 'story'. Know their music, and you begin to know something of them.'
'My music has always explored and attempted to express this. I want to somehow know the depths of it and how it impacts Australians and our own developing culture.'
Associate Professor Legg is a multi-award winning pianist and composer. He has several ARIA nominations and recording and writing credits with Grammy Award-winning artists Myron Butler, Jamar Jones, Khristian Dentley and the Potter's House choir. He is a gifted performer within the African American gospel tradition, which opened the doors of the African American gospel church community to him.
'The African American community is very gracious, but there is a significant 'audition' you need to pass in order to get into that world. You need to be able to play, with a heart and soul that plays through your music, connecting with people. It's always been about more than just the notes,' said Associate Professor Legg.
His first performance in the USA was as a young pianist playing for a choir supporting Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder. This entree into African American culture determined to a major degree the trajectory of his future international career.
Associate Professor Legg is the Director of the Conservatorium of Music and its internationally famous Southern Gospel Choir. The choir is a true 'community' and the living, experimental lab for Legg's ongoing research.
His research is practice-led, looking at the processes of musical performance and composition in African American gospel, and how this is effecting the development of a unique Tasmanian gospel 'voice'. It is also concerned with music's ability to transverse cultural and geographic boundaries and constantly reinvent itself.
Associate Professor Legg's key research has led to him devising an annotated notational system that codifies and describes iconic African American gospel performance practices and techniques.
'Each person in the African American gospel music tradition performs a song in a unique way, reinventing it every time they sing it. Improvisation constantly changes the delivery of the music, reflecting the singers 'take' on life and the song itself. They inject their own emotion into the tune, transforming the song, its impact, its style, even its melody and meaning,' he said.
'Conventional musical notation simply cannot contain or describe the infinite number of possibilities and nuance that each performer brings to the music. My notation system helps in the description of what we hear, and facilitates informed cross-cultural research and discussion of these iconic and critical techniques.'
This often-laborious work is in stark contrast to the exhilaration and enormous energy of Legg's musical performances. But, the detailed listening, analysis and historical research that underpin it have delivered even greater emotional and spiritual connection with the music and its people for him.
'I was transcribing an Aretha Franklin song, the beginning of one of her versions of 'Amazing Grace', mapping on a computer screen what I was hearing. It was intense work and I found myself at times asking why I was doing it at all. When I finally finished, having stepped away for 30 minutes, I looked and listened again to check the accuracy of my notation, and I couldn't stop the tears.
'That moment in my research was an amazing breakthrough. The research had somehow opened a new door to a greater emotional connection and understanding for me. I have chased that experience with my research ever since.'
Associate Professor Andrew Legg is Curator of Music and Performance, Community and Industry Partnerships at the University of Tasmania. Andrew was Director of the Conservatorium of Music until the end of 2017, where he developed a practice-based, performance-led PhD program. He is a classical pianist, composer and educator, who is best known for his work in contemporary music, particularly African American gospel and soul. His research focuses on transculturalisation of African American gospel and soul music into an Australian context. Andrew has released many recordings over his substantial performance career in the USA, including his most recent CD Revelator, which forms part of a research project examining the effects of African American music on original Australian music. In 2001, Andrew founded the Tasmanian Conservatorium's Southern Gospel Choir; their debut CD, Great Day, was nominated for an ARIA award in 2005.
Biography
Andrew has established an international reputation, performing with some of the most respected gospel choirs and artists in the USA, including Take 6, Kristian Dentley, Myron Butler, Dr James Abbington and the late Dr Horace Boyer. In 1997 Andrew was invited to the Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA) in Cincinnati as part of their 30th anniversary celebrations, where he performed as a featured artist and lecturer in gospel piano. Twelve months later he returned as director of music for the Bud Williams Revival concert series in Atlanta, Georgia. He has performed to critical acclaim in concerts and gospel churches throughout the USA, including Dallas, Detroit, Boston and Atlanta, and as a member of the Detroit chapter of the GMWA. Andrew was honoured to collaborate with the late Dr Horace Clarence Boyer from Massachusetts, an acknowledged authority on African American gospel music and highly respected educator, academic and author, composer, gospel singer and choral director. Andrew gained his PhD in African American gospel music in August 2008, having worked closely with Dr Boyer for over 10 years. Boyer acted as chief research supervisor for Andrew's PhD, which examined the nature, place and function of gospel music in Australian culture.
Andrew has performed sell-out concerts with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, toured widely with the Southern Gospel Choir, and was one of four featured artists (along with Paul Grabovsky, Gabrielle Smart and John Cale) in the Eight Hands: Variations on the Theme Piano concert at the MONA FOMA Festival in January 2008.
Andrew continues his longstanding relationship with Grammy award-winning gospel artist and Choral Director at the Potter's House, Myron Butler (God's Property, Kirk Franklin, Levi) and the two have formed a song writing and production team which has produced two award-winning songs in 2009/10 in Australia (My Forever Friend and Amazing Grace). Together they have become the leading gospel choral workshop team underpinning the internationally successful Festival of Voices, and have just completed their first major joint DVD release (Brighter Day) with the Southern Gospel Choir. Andrew has now become Butler's principal supervisor for his PhD.
Andrew has recently completed a sell-out tour of the US with the Southern Gospel Choir, supported by Kristian Dently and Myron Butler. They performed to capacity audiences of more than 20,000 at the Potter's House in Dallas, and then across the Southern USA, including Alabama, Georgia, before finally heading to Los Angeles. The Potter's House performance was broadcast live to a worldwide audience of more than 5 million people.

Expertise
Andrew's research interests are in creating new musical works, drawing on African American traditions and developing a new, uniquely Tasmanian voice for the globalisation of this musical idiom. Andrew founded the 130-voice Southern Gospel Choir in 2001, and their debut CD, Great Day, was nominated for an ARIA award (Best World Music Album) in 2005. With musical partner Michael Spiby, he has now released the Southern Gospel Choir's much anticipated second studio album, High On A Mountain, and their first DVD, Brighter Day.
Publications
Andrew's research examines, details and demonstrates the processes and effects of the transculturalisation of African American gospel music into the Australian and, more specifically, Tasmanian context. The Southern Gospel Choir's Brighter Day was developed as an analytical examination and application of the significant findings of this research. Brighter Day was housed by invitation within Tasmania's most successful multi-disciplinary festival, The Festival of Voices, as a major musical performance, live recording and broadcast, incorporating all aspects of aural and visual production, marketing and front of house management. Finally, Brighter Day was developed to test and examine the effects and impact of culturally-informed music performance practice outside its originating environment, to test the reach and impact of the SGC's performance in Tasmania and the US, and to establish a context for its 2014 US tour to obtain further research data for ongoing publications.
