Maria Grenfell
Associate Professor
Music | School of Creative Arts and Media
Hobart CBD Campuses
Associate Professor Maria Grenfell grew up in Christchurch, New Zealand, surrounded by opportunities to learn musical instruments through school and Saturday morning classes.
She took up the piano and the violin. “You could join one of the many orchestras through the Christchurch School of Music. I just loved it and couldn’t get enough,” she said.
Associate Professor Grenfell’s passion continued into her adult years where she went on to study a Bachelor of Music. In the latter part of her Degree she realised that her long love for music could transition into a successful and fulfilling career as a classical composer.
“I think once I started getting commissions for pieces it made me realise that I could have a career in music and should continue.”
Associate Professor Grenfell has had her orchestral music performed by almost all the professional orchestras in Australia and New Zealand and has also written for chamber orchestras. Highlights include her many commissions from the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (TSO), having a piece recorded by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Opera House and a chamber piece performed at the opening of Disney Hall in Los Angeles.
“I have a very good association with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, as a mentor to student composers as well as working as a composer myself. The TSO has an amazing elite training program. I help with training initiatives to provide opportunities to composers who are either just starting out in college years 11-12, or more advanced emerging composers from around the country.”
In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, Associate Professor Grenfell had the opportunity to write a film score for the ABC documentary Quoll Farm, about the Tasmanian Eastern Quoll. “It was so much fun watching the footage and writing music to the antics of these gorgeous little animals,” she said.
Her vibrant career has not come without its trials. Being a female in a traditionally male field, challenging stereotypes is something she continues to do frequently.
“I am currently a co-editor of two ‘in-press’ books with each chapter by a different woman composer writing about their musical practice. My co-editors and I are very excited about the books because it’s so important that women composers are recognised for the work that they do and the music that they write.”
“Some of the chapters are about the inequities in the industry around programming music written by women composers. Fortunately the tide is slowly turning. I am pleased to say that a growing number of Australian music organisations are making great strides in programming music by women and First Nations composers.”
Associate Professor Grenfell says it is important to her to contribute to the Australian repertoire and to demonstrate to emerging composers that they too can be successful.
“I love writing for orchestra and my most memorable moments to date have been taking a bow on the stage with an orchestra behind me.”
Dr Maria Grenfell is a composer and Associate Professor at the Conservatorium of Music. She completed composition studies in New Zealand and the USA. She has lived in Hobart since July 1998 and is Coordinator of Composition. In 2013 Maria was a visiting professor teaching for one semester at Stephen F Austin State University, and in 2019 she was Kerr Composer in Residence at the Oberlin Conservatory, Ohio. Maria has won two Australian Art Music Awards, and composed the music for the acclaimed ABC documentary, Quoll Farm (2021). Her orchestral music has been commissioned, performed or recorded by all the major symphony orchestras in Australia, New Zealand, and her chamber music is performed widely.

- Description
- Commission to write a short movement for string quartet. The movement will be performed as part of a set of 20 other similar length pieces next July/August at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth. The brief was that each composer was given a tempo, time limit (45 sec), and that it should be a variation on Beethoven's Ode to Joy. The quartet will arrange the movements in the order that suits the pieces when they are received.

- Description
- This project is to compose a twenty minute triple concerto for the Ivy Street Ensemble based in the USA. As this ensemble is an unusual combination of instruments, a trio of flute, violin and viola, there are few trio works available. One method of expanding their repertoire is through commissioning new work. This will be the first time I will write for this combination of instruments, providing a unique and innovative creative opportunity. Three musical organisations have expressed interest in performing the piece in the USA during the 2018-2019 orchestral season.
