Maria Lurighi has been nurturing Voice at the University of Tasmania since being invited to teach in 1999 . During this time Maria has been developing voices from across Tasmanian in all contemporary and jazz genres to show their full potential for their individual careers. Over the past 21 years Maria has been privilege to share a lifelong musical collaboration with Dr Andrew Legg Associate Professor at UTAS. Together they have developed ‘The voice’ as an instrument through their work with The Southern Gospel Choir. This has underpinned principle study contemporary voice and has developed the voice cohort into a strong and viable department. Maria has been a regular performing artist and collaborator with The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra , Ten Days on the Island , MONA FOMA, Festival of Voices. Maria has been a company member for Bighart production for Melbourne Festival ‘Hipbone Sticking Out’ and ‘Blue Angel’. More recently supporting the new Creative Lab project with ‘When Water Falls’
Maria Lurighi has been teaching and influencing voice at The University of Tasmania since 1999. Maria has been able to straddle a unique career across classical and contemporary voice, jazz, R and B across a career that spans 40 years. Since moving to Tasmania Maria has been a performed on many occasions as solo artist with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra Brass Ensemble and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra Brass and Wine Ensemble. Maria has also performed as a solo classical artist with Hobart Chamber Orchestra, The Salon Orchestra and Tasmanian Youth Orchestra. Maria has performed as a solo artist for the Melbourne International Festival. Ten Days on the Island. MOFO and The Festival of Voices. Maria has also been a soloist in a number of newly commissioned works during this time. The first commissioned by Robin Archer and Ten Days on the Island ‘Overheard at Inveresk’ a work for Soprano and Percussion written by David Young. Also “Songs of the Ancient Mariner ‘for Soprano and clarinet written by Rae Marcellino and commissioned by the Wooden Boat festival. IN 2004 Maria was the soloist and compere for the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra program ‘Olympic Spirit’. This was a celebration of the Olympics in Athens with a work for Soprano and orchestra by Constantine Koukias and conducted by Jean Louis Forrestier. Maria was also a soloist in the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra commissioned work by Dr Andrew. Legg ‘Let Freedom ring ‘for Solo Soprano and Solo Tenor, choir and Orchestra conducted by Marko Letonja. Maria has also been a company cast member of two Bighart productions for Melbourne Festival and Ten Days on the Island. ‘Hipbone sticking out ‘and Blue Angel both written works by Scott Rankin. Maria has also been a member of the Opera in development called ‘Amahl’ by John Shand and Lliew Kiek. Maria has been the founding vocal coach for Southern Gospel choir since 2020. Maria has also fostered First Nations vocal and music studies through a Gospel choir project with the Aboriginal Centre for Performing Arts since 2018. Maria has also fostered bringing voice to events at Mona since 2012 working with Kirsha Kechele to disrupt and entice by using the voice naturally in a large acoustic. Maria was also a soloist for MOFO curation by Brian Ritchie for detached gallery with 9 performances using spoken word and song to tell stories of human celebration and also with The Southern Gospel Choir and Brian Jackson. A concert which used spoken word, voice and music for political justice and social change.

Chair of the Individual Grants Panel for Arts Tasmania and has sat on the arts advisory board for the Tasmanian Government. She has been a member of the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra Board, a founding member of the Festival of Voices Board and has served as a Director of Business Events Tasmania Board of Directors. Maria is also currently a member of the ANATS Board for the Tasmanian Chapter. Maria Has just been appointed to the Board of Ten Days on the Island.
Maria’s administrative passion for the arts and festivals was ignited when she was Business Development Manager for Ten Days on the Island from 2004 to 2008. Her international arts festival experience was developed further when she oversaw hospitality operations for MOFO from 2012-2018 and Dark Mofo from 2014-2016.
Maria’s significant career in the arts and business includes roles as Director of Luxury Events and Partnerships and VIP experiences and Director of Hospitality Operations for Mona, the Manager of Domaine A/Stoney Vineyard and General Manager of Hill Street Grocer West Hobart where she returned in 2020.She is currently an area manager for Home, Liquor, Flowers for all Hill street Grocer Southern Stores.
Currently coordinator of Voice for The Hedberg. Have been a returning sellout Gospel Workshop Director for The Festival of Voices . The founding teacher of our indigenous voices outreach with The Aboriginal Centre for Performing Arts in Brisbane . This has brought 10 Indigenous students from all over Australia to UTAS to begin their BMUSC and PHD. Vocal Coach for the Southern Gospel choir since 2020.
- Bighart production ‘Hipbone sticking out’ with an extended educational stay in Roebourne Western Australia to support and teach in community. The telling of the story of John Patt who died in custody in Roebourne jail.
- Bighart production ‘Blue Angel’ for Ten Days on the Island. As an ensemble cast member for this Social Justice telling of ‘Slavery at Sea’
- Bighart ‘when water falls’ – a project that tells the story of water in our community as told by first nations musicians in collaboration with our schools in the North of Tasmania.

- Our first nations voices – a gospel workshop project with the Aboriginal Centre for performing arts and Nathaniel Andrew ( Yorta Yorta PHD candidate at The Hedberg).
Maria has focused on developing the voice to its natural potential to deliver strong and powerful messages into community. The power of a community’s stories and the place ‘the voice’ has to deliver these stories. Developing our young voices into adulthood to be able to ‘sing for a lifetime’. Maria has partnered with fellow Academics, artists and arts companies to foster works for Social Justice and use the voice to that end. Maria has worked with Government to guide and shape individual arts practice for Tasmania. Maria has also work with the support of UTAS on recruiting our first nations voices to develop and strengthen the vocal technique required to support the delivery of their stories. Maria has worked with the UTAS College Program to develop the young voices in our communities with many of our graduates now teaching in Tasmanian schools. Through her business skills Maria has fostered the introducing of ‘Voice’ into events at MONA supported by Kirsha Kechele and David Walsh.

- ‘Richard Smallwood gospel recording collaboration with Dr Andrew Legg, Steven Ford ( UTAS Gospel Music PHD at The Hedberg) a retrospective of the work of Richard Smallwood with a linking of over 1,000 voices across the world.
