Dr Jamie McCallum is a Super Science Fellow at the School of Physical Sciences in the Discipline of Physics. He is working with the Auscope VLBI project, using the newly built 12m radiotelescopes to study quasars and their use as reference points for measuring Earth's rotation and continental plate motions.

Biography

Jamie completed his undergraduate studies (including first class Honours) and PhD studies at the University of Tasmania. After being awarded his PhD in 2009, he took up a position as a research associate working at the Mt. Pleasant observatory operated by the University of Tasmania. After two years, he took up a Super Science Fellowship at the University of Tasmania working with the AuScope project and is currently engaged in this role.

Research Themes

Jamie's research aligns to the University's research theme of Data, Knowledge and Decisions. Geodesy is the science of measuring the Earth, with a fundamental aim of establishing useful and reliable reference frames. Using radio-telescopes with the VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) technique allows us to use distant quasars as fixed reference points to measure the rotation and polar motion of the Earth, and effects such as continental drift. The VLBI technique depends on having a well established celestial reference frame of quasar sources. With a new generation of radio telescopes coming into operation using the VGOS (VLBI Geodetic Observing System) design of wide frequency receivers, it will be essential to measure and model these quasars source structure and evolution. Jamie's research aims to better understand these effects on geodetic measurements made with the University of Tasmania's Australia-spanning telescope array.

Collaboration

Jamie is involved with a number of international observing projects working with observatories based in New Zealand, South Africa, China, Japan and Korea. He has worked closely with New Zealand's Auckland University of Technology on joint observing programs and correlated the first VLBI experiment with their 30m telescope.

Current projects

Jamie is currently working on the broadband feed upgrade of the AuScope 12m telescopes. He is also involved with a number of collaborations with observatories in the Southern hemisphere working to detect and accurately measure new calibrator sources for the celestial reference frame.

Description
This project will support the operation of the AuScope geodetic very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) array, as part of a global network. The 4 radio telescopes of the array are all owned by UTAS, located in Hobart, Katherine and Yarragadee. VLBI operations are highly specialised and need constant research and troubleshooting from skilled scientist. Having reliable and accurate observations as their main aim, Geoscience Australia funds this project including dedicated research towards improved operations and better results. This project is also the basis for maintaining our unique telescope facilities across the continent.
