Dr Vanni Caruso is a medical researcher and lecturer in Pharmacology at the School of Medicine within the Division of Pharmacy. His research interests are in the field of neuroendocrine diseases.

Biography

Before joining the University of Tasmania, Vanni worked as postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Neuroscience, Uppsala University (Sweden). He obtained his PhD at the UNSW, Sydney and his MPharm at the University of Bologna, Italy.

Research Themes

Vanni leads and coordinates interdisciplinary projects between cross departmental research groups in the field of neuroscience and metabolic disorders for clinical and pre-clinical studies. His research focuses on neuroendocrine diseases and converges on the causes of obesity, nociception and cognitive impairments. He is trying to characterise newly identified genes coding for solute carriers involved in the regulation of energy homeostasis and food reward mechanisms. Parallel to obesity, other focus of his research is on cognitive disorders, particularly on the molecular mechanisms leading to glutamate-induced changes in synaptic plasticity within memory and pain.
