Holger Meinke is Strategic Research Professor for Global Food Sustainability at the University of Tasmania, Australia. As an internationally renowned leader in climate, agriculture and food systems research, he provides intellectual leadership for the University. He has published over 110 refereed papers in disciplinary and transdisciplinary journals. He supervises five PhD candidates. Professor Meinke is passionate about education that fosters critical thinking and high-quality research that has impact. He is also the Chair of the ISDC, a standing panel of experts appointed by the CGIAR’s System Council to serve as an independent advisor on science and research matters, including strategies for effective partnerships along the research for development continuum. He was Director of the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture at UTAS for nine years (2011-2019) before taking on his new role as Strategic Research Professor.
Biography
Before joining the University of Tasmania, Holger held the Chair of Crop and Weed Ecology at Wageningen University, The Netherlands (2007–2011). Prior to that he was a cropping systems scientist with the Queensland Government and APSRU (1988–2007), where he co-developed the agricultural systems simulation platform, APSIM. He has a BSc from Hohenheim University (1983), an MSC from the Technical University Berlin (1986) and PhD from Wageningen University (1996). In 2014 he became a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD). Holger grew up on a viticultural research station in Southern Germany and migrated to Australia in 1986.

Research Themes
Holger's work touches on all of the University's research themes; it is particularly aligned with Environment, Resources and Sustainability and Data, Knowledge and Decisions. His research focuses on the resource use efficiencies of agricultural crops, the development and application of modelling approaches to solve real issues in agricultural practices and input into policy development. His work includes quantifying interactions between genotype, environment and management in order to improve the profitability and sustainability of agricultural practices. His passion is research that connects basic science with practical outcomes. He frequently crosses disciplinary boundaries, which is reflected in his publication record. Holger has published extensively in journals focusing on crop physiology, agricultural systems, the science – policy domain, climate science and applied risk management.
Collaboration
As President of the Australian Council of Deans of Agriculture (ACDA), Holger actively encourages stronger collaboration between the 15 member universities across Australia. Holger also has a strong collaborative network with senior staff in CSIRO, the Australian Government and several State Governments. Internationally Holger is negotiating conjoint PhD agreements with various universities such as Wageningen (agreement already executed), and various others, currently under negotiation such as Lincoln University (NZ), University of Hohenheim (Germany), University of Würzburg (Germany) and the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. Holger has served for six years (two terms) on the Independent Science Panel for the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture & Food Security (CCAFS). Through this involvement he has established a strong collaborative network throughout the CGIAR.

- Description
- In this highly innovative project we will analyse the genome and transcriptome of a highly salt tolerant wild rice species Oryza coarctata to reveal novel mechanisms that confer salt tolerance that can be incorporated into traditional (O. sativa) rice varieties to boost their salinity stress tolerance. This will be achieved by addressing the following major objectives:(a) Quantifying the relative contribution and providing a comprehensive assessment of key physiological traits contributing to salinity stress tolerance in Oryzacoarctata, both at the cellular and whole-plant levels;(b) Identifying and cloning key transport genes conferring the above traits;(c) Assessing function and regulation of key transport genes in Oryzacoarctata in planta and using heterologous expression systems; and (d) Overexpressing the above genes in (traditional) O. sativa genotypes and assessing plant performance under saline conditions in glasshouse and field experiments. The ultimate goal of this work is to create truly salt tolerant rice varieties for farmers' fields.

- Description
- Training Centre for Innovative Horticultural Products: Adding value to horticulture value chains from producer to consumer. This project will produce "industry-relevant" researchers and lead to more convenient and longer lasting fresh and fresh-like fruits and vegetables. The project will involve growers, food processors and a major retailer to increase industry productivity, expand markets for Australian foods, and increase choices of healthy products for consumers. This Centre will train a pool of researchers focussed on needs and opportunities in the Australian food industry through projects and formal training with active collaboration from food growers, processors and retailers. This training model and its graduates will enhance the capacity of Australia's fresh produce industry to innovate to meet consumer needs and develop opportunities in local and international markets, aiding Australia's food security and improving the industry's competitiveness.

Research Supervision
Expectations are that PhD candidates structure their theses as a series of publishable papers. On average candidates are expected to publish three papers from their thesis. At least one of these papers should be published and the others should be in review with reputable journals before the thesis is submitted. The diversity of the three most recent PhD graduates (below) is indicative of Holger's research interests:
- Don Gaydon, 2012: Living with less water – development of viable adaptation options for Riverina irrigators (Australia)
- Awan Masood, 2013: Improving resource-use efficiency in rice-based systems of Pakistan
- Marcia de Melo Carvalho, 2014: The impact of wood biochar as a soil amendment in aerobic rice systems of the Brazilian Savannah
