Dr Mark Harrison is Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies in the School of Social Sciences in the College of Arts, Law and Education. He is also a Founding Fellow of the Australian Centre on China in the World at the Australian National University.
Biography
Prior to the University of Tasmania, Mark Harrison was a Research Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Democracy at the University of Westminster in London, UK. He is the author of a range of publications on Taiwanese and Chinese politics, culture, and society. These include the monograph 'Legitimacy Meaning and Knowledge in the Making of Taiwanese Identity' with Palgrave Macmillan in 2006 and the edited volume The Margins of Becoming. Identity and Culture in Taiwan, with Harrassowitz Verlag in 2007. Recent work includes 2019 Special Report for the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, 'Rethinking Taiwan Policy: History, Politics, Ideology', Art, violence and memory in Taiwan: Telling the story of the beautiful island, Thesis Eleven 146(1):3-23, and a contribution to 'China and the Australian States and Territories', Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, 2021. He writes a regular series on Taiwan and China for ASPI's The Strategist and is frequently cited in the national and international news media on Taiwan and Australia-Taiwan and Australia-China relations.

Dr Mark Harrison teaches into Introduction to Politics and Policy and also China’s Global Power and Modern Political Ideologies. He has taught Chinese language and Studies, including China’s politics, society and culture.
Research Appointments
Dr Mark Harrison participates in Track 2 dialogue between Australia, Taiwan and the US and engages with the US, PRC, Taiwan and Australian governments in closed-door settings on regional and international relations. He liaises frequently with the Australian defence, foreign affairs, intelligence and signals community.

Expertise
Dr Mark Harrison brings social theory, international relations and cultural studies methodologies to study contemporary social and political life in the Chinese-speaking world, with an emphasis on the study of Taiwan. His work is engaged with questions of history, memory and ideology and how they impact relations between Taiwan and China and the future of the region. His work impacts policy-making and policy analysis in the Australian and other national governments. His expertise is frequently sought by government, the national and international media and other public institutions to assess current developments in regional relations and in the Taiwan Strait.

- Description
- The intiating activity of the project will be to:1) undertake a fieldwork research visit to Taiwan in 2016 to the White Terror Archives held at the National Museum of Human Rights in Jingmei and the Green Island Human Rights Culture Park to acquire research material and to host a seminar on Taiwan's new politics of historiography at the start of the Tsai Ing-Wen era.
