Dr Michael A. Guerzoni is a criminologist at the School of Social Sciences in the College of Arts, Law and Education. His research examines organisational culture, deviance, and crime prevention, with a particular focus on the safeguarding of children within religious institutions. Mike is also interested in the wellbeing of Indigenous children, the Indigenising of Curricula, and Anglican studies.

Biography

Mike trained as a qualitative criminologist at the University of Tasmania, being awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (Criminology) in 2018. Before his appointment to the School of Social Sciences in 2021, he worked in a collection of research, teaching and professional roles, serving in the School of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Law, and the Office of the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Aboriginal Leadership at the University of Tasmania. Mike is a descendent of the Trawulwuy people of Tasmania’s northeast and post-war Italian migrants.

As of 2023, Mike serves as Co-Investigator on an Australian Research Council Linkage project titled ‘Fostering school attendance for students in Out-of-Home Care’, which is lead by Professor Kitty te Riele of The Peter Underwood Centre (University of Tasmania).

Research Supervision

Mike has co-supervised several research students in the Social Sciences to completion on topics pertaining to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

At present, Mike welcomes supervision requests from students who are pursuing research on topics pertaining to: organisational culture; organisational deviance; the safeguarding of children from child sexual abuse; and situational crime prevention. He is willing to serve as secondary supervisor on topics pertaining to: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander criminal justice issues; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education; child protection; and juvenile justice.
