- Description
- Sandy beaches in western Tasmania are subjected to high-energy storm events. Historical aerial photographic evidence shows accelerating shoreline erosion since 1980 at Ocean Beach preceded by > 35 years of stability. Monitoring of Ocean Beach over the last 5 years shows continued retreat of the shoreline. This erosion has exposed peats in the swale behind the foredune destroyed by erosion. The purpose of this grant is to date the organic material to provide a longer time perspective on dune building. The key question we seek to address is: whether the current scale of erosion of the dune historically unprecedented?

- Description
- This project aims to identify coastal process risks, in particular erosion, to historic assets at the Port Arthur and Coal Mines historic sites on Tasman Peninsula. The project will characterise and map the geomorphological (landform) characteristics of shorelines within the Port Arthur Historic Sites Management Authority's (PAHSMA) management boundaries, and characterise the vulnerabilities of differing shoreline types and locations to storm surges and other coastal processes. The project will identify the types and characteristics of storm events likely to be more damaging to some of these shores than others, and will identify past, present and future coastal changes that may place historic assets at risk. Relevant knowledge gaps will be identified.

- Description
- This project builds on a preceding First Pass assessment of potential coastal hazards on the Kingborough Council shoreline. The new project will involve collating Kingborough-wide datasets that are relevant to understanding and regionalising coastal hazards including wave erosion and storm surge flooding (e.g., existing coastal geomorphic mapping, swell-wave modelling) and creating relevant new datasets in at least one case (fetch-wave modelling). In addition the project will focus on each coastal hazard 'hot spot' identified by the previous first pass assessment, and will use field work and other information to identify in more detail the ways in which coastal hazard processes may threaten assets at each such location; this information will be used to advise council on appropriate ways to approach planning to mitigate or adapt to the hazards (in particular identifying further information and research that may need to be pursued to enable appropriate planning decisions to be made).

- Description
- This project will provide a 'First Pass' assessment of coastal hazards (erosion and inundation, with consideration of increased hazard susceptibility with sea-level rise). The project will use existing datasets (including geological mapping, coastal landform mapping, and coastal inundation modelling). Using these and other datasets, shorelines susceptible to various styles of coastal erosion will be identified, as will areas susceptible to coastal inundation. Key coastal hazard 'hotspots' will be identified, being those locations where significant susceptibility to coastal hazards (now and increasingly in future) places significant human or natural assets at risk. The project outputs will be provided as digital map layers accompanied by a concise explanatory report.
