Dr Ross Corkrey is a Senior Research Fellow in Biometrics at the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA).

Ross is a statistician with expertise in applied Bayesian methods and statistical analysis in numerous areas including ecology, survey methods, agriculture, and population models.

He is interested in the influence of temperature on the rate of growth of organisms and its extension to higher levels, early life, and astrobiology.

Biography

Ross has had a non-traditional career for an academic. Before beginning his PhD studies he was a research assistant, public servant and professional statistician. He has worked in South Australia, Tasmania, Canberra and Newcastle, as well as Northern Scotland and Cambridge in the UK.  He began tertiary studies as a mature-aged student and later gained a PhD at the University of Newcastle. He released a software suite for electronic interviewing under an open source license.

Following his PhD, Ross conducted research at the Universities of Aberdeen and Cambridge, UK, working on modelling dolphin population trends, and has developed novel applications of Bayesian methods in capture-recapture methodology.

Ross is currently Senior Research Fellow at the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture, University of Tasmania providing statistical consultation services. In 2012 he resumed research activities, which has principally been in the application of Bayesian statistics to Thermal Biology.

Research Themes

Ross' research aligns mostly with the theme of Environment, Resources and Sustainability. He is interested in exploring the fundamental aspects of factors affecting life on Earth. His work demonstrated that temperature-dependent growth rates of all three domains of life (Eukarya, Bacteria and Archaea) could described by a single model. This was an important and fundamental result in since it demonstrated that particular thermodynamic constants were universal to the growth of all life on Earth.

Ross discovered the Biokinetic Spectrum for Temperature, which describes the possible growth rates for terrestrial life.

Ross works with others on extending the influence of cellular level temperature-dependencies to higher levels through to ecosystems and global phenomena. He also collaborates on abiotic factors affecting the early evolution of life and in astrobiology.

Collaboration

Ross is currently part of an international collaboration centred in New Zealand that aims to study the role of temperature across all biology, from cells to ecosystems.

He works with researchers at CODES on the influence of abiotic factors on early life and astrobiology.

He also works with researchers at IMAS on the role of temperature in marine ecosystems.

Smelling soil (2019 - 2020)$299,709
Description
Healthy soil microbial communities are essential for high performing soils, however there is currently a lack of rapid in field testing techniques which can evaluate the status of a soil microbial community. We can equate the health of soils to mainly microbial activity, but diversity also plays a role in terms of health stability (or resilience). eNose profile changes could be most useful if equated to changes in diversity and activity. Current thinking is that there needs to be at an optimal level for maximal resilience - a Goldilocks type arrangement. By monitoring the gases emitted by the soil microbial community an assessment of both activity and diversity may be made. The tool could provide real time data permitting both long term monitoring and assessment of management practices (i.e. tilling, fertilisation, irrigation) on soil microbial health.

Identifying opportunities to improve fruit quality in Driscolls Tasmanian supply chains (2018 - 2019)$13,608
Description
Driscolls, the worlds largest distributor of fresh berries, and the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA), a joint venture between the University of Tasmania (UTAS) and the Tasmanian Government, have been in conversation since 2017 to explore opportunities to collaborate in areas of mutual interest. Following meetings held in the US and in Hobart, supply chain visibility was identified as an area to initiate a collaborative engagement.Driscolls is seeking to improve visibility of key environmental conditions and post-harvest practices that affect fruit quality in their Tasmanian berry supply chains. Fruit picked on Tasmanian farms are transported to retail outlets in mainland Australia through temperature-controlled supply chains. The quality of fruit is highly sensitive to post-harvest practices and changes in environmental conditions (e.g. temperature, humidity and vibration) during transport. At present, Driscolls has developed best management post-harvest practices but lacks visibility of their adoption, or of deviations in optimal environmental conditions, along the supply chain. Mapping environmental data in these supply chains can show Driscolls which specific practices translate into changes in fruit quality.TIA and UTAS have previous research experience in developing supply chain traceability systems, bringing together capabilities in sensing, telemetry, value chain and supply chain analysis, horticulture, food safety and food quality. TIA is keen to develop this research capability further by working in close collaboration with Driscolls to better understand how technological advances in sensing and communications can be leveraged to deliver enhanced value in supply chains. This project is designed as a short trial to develop proof of key principles and build trust between TIA and Driscolls, as a first step towards a productive partnership into the future. Aims of this project:Map Driscolls Tasmanian berry supply chains, including temperature, humidity and potentially vibration (i.e. collect sensor-based data) and identify critical control pointsAudit postharvest handling practices, including harvesting, packing, delivery to cooler, cooling etc. to identify improvement opportunities.

Sense-T Stage 2: Viticulture (2015 - 2016)$517,313
Description
This project creates a system of live knowledge management that integrates human observations of grape production with sensor-derived intelligence to constantly improve the quality and accuracy of variables predicting crop stages or those associated with grape yield and quality. The system will support better decision making by vineyard managers and winemakers about crop interventions and winery logistics. Not only will this tool strengthen the functionality of the Sense-T Stage 1 viticulture app, it will also facilitate users to collaborate and share data and knowledge for constructive advantage and entrepreneurship. This value-adding will promote technology adoption and sustainable expansion of the Tasmanian wine and grape industry.

Description
The project will generate important results as a solid basis on which to develop decision support and optimal management practice for pre-harvest rot of sweet cherries in Australia. The research aims are to: clarify the key pathogens leading to pre-harvest rot in several representative sweet cherry regions in Australia (southern Tasmania, central west NSW, Adelaide Hills SA and southern Victoria; determine infection pathways for the key pathogens in sweet cherry in Australia; and ensure that management is targeted at the right time. The project will increase knowledge to support (or challenge) the current understanding of rot pathogens in sweet cherry in Australia. Findings will provide a basis for future research on optimal fungicide use and other management tools.

Factors that underpin the certainty of yield and quality for cool climate viticulture (2012 - 2015)$126,390
Description
The project will create an understanding of past and current research findings relevant to yield and quality for cool climate viticulture. It will enable manipulation of fruit quality, underpinnned by an understanding of the physiological impact of leaf removal. It will enable fruitfulness prediction with greater certainty for yield stabilisation.
