Dr Brian Horton is a Senior Animal Scientist in the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture, specialising in sheep health and welfare, sheep behaviour, sheep lice and flystrike. He uses models of sheep disease and develops decision support systems to determine best practice methods of controlling these diseases and improving sheep welfare.

Biography

After postdoctoral studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA) and John Curtin School of Medical Research (ANU, Canberra), Brian was a Senior Biochemist for 10 years with the Victorian Department of Agriculture. He then worked in Western Australia on computer programs for agriculture, particularly for animal breeding, and was a statistician, programmer and geneticist in Immunology at Royal Perth Hospital.

Brian then became a geneticist with the Tasmanian Department of Agriculture and Department of Primary Industry, before changing to parasitology, specialising on sheep lice and flystrike, with the aim of reducing pesticide residues associated with treatment of lice and flies. More recent work with the University of Tasmania includes more general aspects of sheep genetics, health, behaviour and welfare.

Expertise

  • Modelling weather related risk of flystrike
  • Decision support systems for control of flystrike
  • Lice population models and lice decision support systems
  • Sheep breeding models
  • Data analysis for sheep health and welfare and development of decision support models to improve sheep health

Research Themes

Brian's research aligns to the University's theme of Environment, Resources and Sustainability. The studies on sheep lice and flystrike not only improve sustainable production of sheep, but reduce environmental contamination resulting from inappropriate use of pesticides required to treat these pests. His current research on sheep health and welfare will improve the efficiency of sheep production by making improved use of the resources available, ensuring sustainable production systems are possible without impairing animal welfare.

Collaboration

Dr Brian Horton primarily works on projects for the Sheep Cooperative Research Centre (CRC), which is a collaboration between Universities and State Departments in all Australian states, to improve sheep and wool production and sheep welfare.

Current projects

  • Sheep CRC Program: Enhanced sheep well-being and productivity. This project examines data analysis to determine factors affecting sheep health and production, development of models to study sheep health and welfare and development of decision support systems to improve sheep health and welfare. The project includes automatic monitoring of sheep and automatic data collection to provide information for the decision support systems.

At the University of Tasmania, Honours student projects have included the use of flytraps to reduce flystrike and the use of lice population models to study best practice lice control.Models of lice and flystrike have also been used for summer student projects, resulting in published results.

PhD and MSc projects have been supervised prior to joining the University of Tasmania.
