Dr Joanna Jones is Programme Leader Learning and Teaching, lecturer and researcher at the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA). Dr Jones' research interests include the manipulation of perennial horticulture physiology for maximised grape, wine, cider and cherry quality. Joanna contributes to the undergraduate teaching program in the areas of horticulture, viticulture, farm business management and extension, as well as supervises honours, masters and PhD candidates.

Biography

Dr Jones completed her PhD in grapevine fruitfulness and yield management. She then furthered this theme with a post-doc funded by the Grape and Wine Research and Development Corporation (now Wine Australia) focussing on fruitfulness in more detail. With subsequent post-doctoral projects in sparkling wine production and sweet cherry fruitlet abscission (funded by AusIndustry and Tasmanian vineyards, and HAL respectively), her expertise in carbohydrate partitioning and reproductive biology developed. Dr Jones commenced teaching horticulture and viticulture into the agricultural undergraduate degrees and now coordinates and teaches the Farm Business Management unit. She also has considerable media experience, having worked in broadcast media for ABC Rural and print media with the Stock and Land newspaper.

Research Themes

Dr Jones' research aligns with the University's research themes of Environment, Resources and Sustainability and Data, Knowledge and Decisions. Her research interests include the strengthening of Tasmania's sustainable wine, apple and cherry industries. Her applied research aims to improve understanding around the reproductive growth phases of perennial crops and in turn management techniques for maximised yields of premium quality. Joanna is also interested in the use of on-farm trials and participatory research and works with next-users to deliver research outputs which will lead to the uptake of improved production practices.

Improving grapevine quality and yield through improved vine nutrition and pruning (2017 - 2019)$54,953
Description
The current proposal will establish nutrient and irrigation treatments with the aim of stabilising yield across seasons. Preliminary work by TIAs Grape and Wine Team over the past two years has established that nutrient application in vineyards could well be contributing to the lack of yield consistency. An additional decision which faces growers is the choice around timing of pruning, and the style of pruning, either cane or spur pruning. This decision is further complicated by the introduction of mechanical cane and spur pruners to the state. Under cane pruning systems, knowledge about cane selection is also vital. The proposal is tightly aligned with the WA strategic plan 2015-2020, priority 1, Increasing demand and the premium paid for all Australian wine, specifically strategy 3 which is to build Australian Grape and Wine Excellence.

How does tannin and anthocyanin in the grapes relate to wine quality? (2014)$6,000
Description
Tannin is a critical component of red wine and influences both wine colour and mouth-feel. Research has shown good correlation between wine grades and tannin concentration. Young wines contain free anthocyanins, but as wines age they are incorporated into stable pigment, mainly through reaction with tannin. The proposed project aims to define the relationship between grape tannin and anthocyanin and the resulting wine tannin and anthocyanin. Using ten Tasmanian vineyards to obtain a good spectrum of fruit types, Pinot Noir fruit of the same clone will be collected at commercial harvest. Fruit will then be tested for total tannin and total anthocyanin. Small scale wine making will be performed and at the end of fermentation the wine will undergo the same analysis for total tannin and anthocyanin. It is possible that the result will be a prediction tool to allow growers to select fruit parcels based on the desired final wine quality or options for manipulating the fruit during the wine making process to achieve desired outcome. Leaf removal is a commonly used strategy to improve the light environment around the bunch, which in turn can improve colour and tannin development. At each of the trial sites in this study, a leaf removal treatment will be imposed in an attempt to promote greater tannin and anthocyanin development. This higher light environment could impact the grape concentration of the compounds, which will become evident in the grape and wine analysis. This project focuses on the measurement of tannin and colour of red grapes specifically.

Factors that underpin the certainty of yield and quality for cool climate viticulture (2012 - 2015)$126,390
Description
The project will create an understanding of past and current research findings relevant to yield and quality for cool climate viticulture. It will enable manipulation of fruit quality, underpinnned by an understanding of the physiological impact of leaf removal. It will enable fruitfulness prediction with greater certainty for yield stabilisation.
