Associate Professor Kara Barry is an Associate Professor in the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture and has conducted research since 1997 relating to plant health and growth. With experience mainly in forest plantation and perennial horticultural systems, her research has examined plant-pathogen interactions, plant responses to stress, disease management and plant relationships with beneficial fungi. Associate Professor Barry teaches plant pathology, crop protection and grant writing skills. She has been a Graduate Research Coordinator since 2012 and held the role of Deputy Associate Dean Research in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology for two years from 2016-2017.

Biography

Associate Professor Barry completed her PhD at the University of Tasmania in 2000, and then completed two postdoctoral research positions before taking up a lecturing position in 2008. From 2001-2003, she conducted research on disease management in Indonesian acacia plantations (ACIAR-funded project), and from 2004-2007, completed an ARC-Linkage postdoctoral fellowship examining plant responses to stress for detection via remote sensing. From 2008-2011, she then conducted research for the CRC Forestry in plant responses to defoliation. More recently, she has conducted research in horticultural crops related to plant disease and growth.

Memberships

Professional practice

Kara has been a member of the Australasian Plant Pathology Society since 1997 and is currently the convenor for the Tasmanian branch of the society. She is a member of the Ag Institute Australia and was a national non-executive director from 2012-2015. In this role she chaired the Communications sub-committee and the National Student Award.

Administrative expertise

Associate Professor Barry has been a Graduate Research Coordinator since 2012 and Deputy Associate Dean (Research) from 2016-2017. She has held positions on various committees including the Faculty Research Committee and Research Degrees Committee and also participated in numerous working groups across the university. She was elected to Academic Senate in 2018.

Teaching expertise

Kara has teaching experience primarily in plant pathology and related subjects (mycology, crop protection). She also currently teaches grant writing to Masters coursework and PhD students. She regularly supervises honours projects and supervises several MSc and PhD research projects.

Expertise

With experience mainly in forest plantation and perennial horticultural systems, Kara has conducted research to examine plant-pathogen interactions, plant responses to stress, disease management and plant relationships with beneficial fungi. She has expertise in plant extractive and pigment chemistry, disease assessment, spectral analysis, plant physiology and molecular identification of fungi.

Research Themes

Kara's research aligns to the research theme of Environment, Resources and Sustainability. She is committed to supporting forestry and agriculture using sustainable management solutions to manage plant health and disease. This includes sustainable management of disease via use of integrated pest management and fungicide alternatives.

Collaboration

Kara has collaborated with several international universities (e.g. Mie University, Japan; University Paris, France; Miami University, USA) and institutes (e.g. Ministry of Forestry, Indonesia). At the national level, Kara has collaborated with CSIRO, multiple forest companies, universities and government bodies (e.g. NSW DPI).

TIA have been invited to collaborate with SARDI in a grapevine trunk disease project proposal to Wine Australia. There are two main fungal pathogens which cause trunk diseases and both are becoming more of a concern for aging vineyards, including in Tasmania. The Tasmanian aspect of this project will include grapevine inoculation trials with both of these pathogens, followed by assessment of disease development.

New On-farm Strategies for the Prevention and Control of Blueberry rust in Tasmania (2022 - 2025)$479,292
Description
Blueberry rust is contained to a small number of properties in Tasmania, but there are gaps in knowledge about how the rust survives over winter and when infection risk occurs. This project will determine the limits of survival to inform biosecurity decision-making and reduce spread. Varieties which retain leaves over winter can harbour the pathogen and the use of defoliation will potentially break the disease cycle. This project will explore the best ways to conduct defoliation and determine the impact on future crop yield and quality. The project will provide the blueberry industry with practical information and precision tools to contain blueberry rust.

This small project will investigate quantification of Trichoderma harzianum from Australian vineyard soils using a species-specific qPCR method. This training program will facilitate collaboration between University of Tasmania and Foshan University (China). Scholarships and operating costs will be provided by Foshan University for up to 10 candidates. UTAS will provide tuition fee scholarships. Developing tools to screen native pepper for resistance to dieback and tolerance to drought (2019 - 2022)$30,000

In this project we will seek to characterise genetic variation for superior disease resistance and drought tolerance, using novel screening methods including physiological, chemical and molecular markers. Resistance of Botrytis cinerea to selected fungicides (2019)$25,354
Description
This project will use best-practice protocols to determine growth response of single genotype Botrytis cinerea isolates in response to a range of fungicides currently in commercial use. This will involve laboratory trials, data analysis, calculation of EC50 and classification of isolates into resistance group. Botrytis cinerea is an important pathogen of fruit crops which can cause significant crop losses, and studies of this nature have not been conducted in Tasmanian horticultural systems before.

This 2 year research project will evaluate a range of crop protectants to provide control of rust disease (caused by Thekopsora minima) in blueberry. This will be conducted via controlled growth room trials and outdoor trials. Biopesticides in horticulture: efficacy of Trichoderma harzianum to control Botrytis cinerea in horticultural crops (2019 - 2021)$144,373
Description
The overall objective of this project is to improve the efficacy of biopesticides, using a strain of Trichoderma harzianum as a model. This beneficial fungal species has demonstrated ability to reduce incidence of Botrytis cinerea disease (grey mould) in sweet cherry and grapevine. With many major markets seeking to reduce pesticide use and residue, it has been predicted that within the next 30 years the market size of biopesticides will equal that of synthetic crop protection products. The approach of this project is to investigate the survival biology of T. harzianum and understand how it interacts with B. cinerea in the field. The PhD project will involve both laboratory and field studies to determine what limits germination, growth & survival and therefore how to optimise efficacy of the biopesticide. Both conventional and molecular plant pathology techniques will be utilised. The project will also investigate whether viral infection of the biological control agent may be limiting survival and performance of the biopesticide. The outcomes of this project will be knowledge that can be implemented by the manufacturers of Trichoderma biopesticides to improve their efficacy and therefore reduce disease in horticultural crops

Novel technologies and practises for the optimisation of pollination within protected cropping environments (2019 - 2023)$1,259,944
Description
Pollination is essential for production of most fruit and seed crops and it is often the limiting factor for both yield and product quality. Despite its fundamental importance, management of pollination has not received the level of innovation and technological advancement that is warranted. At present, pollination of the majority of Australia's horticultural crops is dependent on the European honeybee (Apis mellifera), from either wild colonies and/or domesticated hives introduced in to the crop. The heavy dependence on this one species is a major risk and limitation to horticulture in Australia (and globally). The risks to Australian horticulture that this situation poses can only be alleviated by the development of alternative pollination systems.This project seeks to address the lack of research into pollination systems to develop robust approaches for key horticultural crops based on fundamental research. TIA will seek to lead the mechanical pollination component of the program.

This is an application for operating funds to support a PhD project (Mrs Reham Mohammed). This project will investigate the distribution and abundance of native arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in southern Tasmania, using a range of molecular approaches. Information of AMF in Tasmania is poor however interest in the role of soil biology for both conservation and productive landscapes is growing. AMF are symbionts that colonise plant roots and can play vital roles in plant functioning and soil health, both in natural and managed landscapes. Optimal management of pre-harvest rot in sweet-cherry (2013 - 2016)$149,779

The project will generate important results as a solid basis on which to develop decision support and optimal management practice for pre-harvest rot of sweet cherries in Australia. The research aims are to: clarify the key pathogens leading to pre-harvest rot in several representative sweet cherry regions in Australia (southern Tasmania, central west NSW, Adelaide Hills SA and southern Victoria; determine infection pathways for the key pathogens in sweet cherry in Australia; and ensure that management is targeted at the right time. The project will increase knowledge to support (or challenge) the current understanding of rot pathogens in sweet cherry in Australia. Findings will provide a basis for future research on optimal fungicide use and other management tools.
