Dr Sally Bound is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Tasmania, Australia. She works in the Perennial Horticulture Centre within the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture. Her research focuses on crop manipulation and fruit quality in orchard tree crops, and on finding solutions to soil degradation. In particular, Sally works closely with industry to optimize crop yields and fruit quality. She also provides technical information and advice to orchardists and industry groups, and conducts workshops, seminars and training courses throughout Australia.

Biography

Following 17 year's experience working in Horticulture with the Tasmanian Department of Primary Industry and as a part-time teacher, examiner and moderator for Certificate courses run by TAFE (Technical & Further Education), Sally joined the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture when it formed in 1997. She has extensive experience in research and development project management, project implementation, reporting and publishing, as well as industry-specific consulting.

She has collaborated with or undertaken contract research for several international organisations, including private companies and government bodies, and has been chief investigator of numerous successful research grant awards, covering local and national projects. She collaborates closely with growers, industry groups and other researchers, and is currently a team member in several research grant funded projects with international collaboration.

Sally's research in crop load management of pome fruit has led to the development and registration of several plant bio regulators for use as chemical thinning agents for pome fruit, and she has been instrumental in the development of an expert system to provide best practice advice to industry on crop regulation in apples. The outcomes of her research into low-volume spray technology and environmentally friendly plant bio regulators have assisted orchardists in reducing chemical use in orchards. Sally's work has led to recognition by industry as the Australian leader in pome fruit crop regulation, and she is recognised within the national and international research communities as a leading researcher in this field.

She has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications, plus one book and two book chapters. She has 60+ conference papers and has had over 50 articles published in industry magazines and newsletters. Her research currently encompasses the following areas in apple and cherry crops: (i) canopy manipulation for control of crop load; (ii) the role of rest-breaking agents to control bud-break, flowering and fruit set; and (iii) alternative nutrient management practices to promote biological activity in the soil.

Expertise

  • Use of plant bioregulators to improve yield efficiency and fruit quality in temperate orchard crops
  • Canopy manipulation techniques for modern orchard systems
  • Optimising spray application
  • Sustainable orchard floor and soil management
  • Reducing pesticide use in orchards

Research Themes

Sally's research aligns to the University's research theme of Environment, Resources and Sustainability. Her research interests include understanding the interaction of plant bio regulators (PBRs) in perennial cropping systems and the impact of canopy manipulation on yield and fruit quality. As many orchard crops do not crop consistently every year, Sally's research with PBRs and canopy manipulation is working towards the achievement of regular cropping cycles and improved fruit quality. She is also working on developing sustainable orchard floor and soil management practices, comparing conventional orchard nutrition with alternative nutrient management using humates, biostimulants and targeted mineral applications designed to promote biological activity in the soil.

Collaboration

Sally's research collaborations/partnerships with international research organisations have included Dr Max Williams (Department of Agriculture, USA), Dr Joshua Klein (Institute of Plant Sciences, Israel), Prof Matt Whiting (Washington State University, USA), Dr Stuart Tustin (Plant & Food Research New Zealand).

She has established and managed national projects linking Australian researchers from WA Department of Agriculture, NSW Agriculture, SA Primary Industries and Resources, Qld Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Victorian Department of Environment and Primary Industries, and a range of private research companies in all states. She has also worked with a range of companies interested in plant bioregulators and spray technology, including Acadian Seaplants Limited (Canada), Abbott Australasia Pty Ltd, CropLands Equipment Pty Ltd, Silvan Pumps and Sprayers (Australia) Pty Ltd, Fine Agrochemicals Ltd (UK), Gro-Chem NZ Limited (New Zealand), United Agrichemicals (USA), Valent BioSciences Corporation, Sumitomo Australia, Elf Atochem (USA), Crop Care Australasia.

Awards

  • 2010 BioNova travel award for scientific exchange with Acadian Sea Plants Ltd, Nova Scotia

Current projects

Sally is currently undertaking research projects funded by Horticulture Innovation Australia Ltd, using apple and cherry industry levies and matched funds from the Australian Government, plus voluntary contributions from Plant & Food Research NZ and the Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission.

The apple projects are focused on: (1) examination of biochar and compost soil amendments in high input orchards, and (2) investigating crop load management, tree structure and light interception by canopies in order to optimise apple yield and quality, and (3) the potential of dormancy-breaking agents as an orchard management adaptation to inadequate winter chill under future Australian climates. The cherry projects involve working in close association with industry to (1) develop recommendations for crop load management in cherries through the use of plant bioregulators, girdling and understanding floral biology, and (2) adding the science in a critical look at how alternative nutrient management influences soil health and ultimately fruit quality.

Protected cropping for high value horticultural production: effects of climate modification and growing systems using cherry as a case study (2020 - 2021)$114,373
Description
Significant investment is currently occurring in protected cropping systems (PCS) across Australia driven by improved yield, quality and significantly reduced risk of adverse weather conditions due to climate variability. This is particularly focussed on high value fruit and vegetables such as tomato, capsicum, and berries. PCS have been recently installed in cherry growing regions to alleviate the risk of late season rains. However, the effects of PCS on environmental conditions and how growing systems should be designed to most efficiently capture resources needs investigation. These are new growing environments that if understood offer the possibility of quantum shifts in production of yield and quality. The aim of this project is to quantify the effects of PCS on key climate variables (relevant to all crops grown under PCS) and use cherry as a case study to this end. The results will provide strategies to best capture value of crops grown under PCS through enabling the production of quality that is demanded by discerning consumers of horticultural produce.

Pilot Sterile Codling Moth Releases for the Apple industry (2019 - 2022)$747,831
Description
The goal of this pilot project is to develop recommendations for the integration of sterile codling moth into existing apple and pear management and production programs in Australia. This pilot project will review the current-status of codling moth in Australian apple and pear growing regions and establish release sites to determine the efficacy of sterile codling moth in control of wild populations. The project will:Investigate safe and secure biosecurity pathways for entry of sterile codling moth from Canadas OKSIR sterile insect program;Identify suitable test regions representative of Australian domestic and export apple production zones for the safe release and testing of sterile codling moth;Cooperate and work with industry grower participants and community stakeholders to determine the effectiveness of sterile codling moth within existing area-wide integrated pest management (IPM) programs;Conduct an economic assessment of the release program and a cost benefit analysis of sterile insect technologies for control of codling moth for the apple and pear industry;Make recommendations for the adoption and integration of sterile codling moth into IPM programs based on findings and the effectiveness of control of codling moth using sterile insect technologies;Develop decision support systems for sterile codling moth release for area-wide IPM systems based on environmental conditions, topography, vegetation and host density;Provide a highly accessible contact point for community and industry enquiries about this pilot program ensuring community and stakeholder engagement on its scientific progress and findings.Based on the scientific findings from this pilot program, a report will be delivered to industry on use of sterile insect technology (SIT) for control of codling moth and its implementation into existing pest management programs for all Australian apple and pear growing regions. This project also supports the Australia apple and pear strategic investment plan 2017-2021.

Australian apple export manual and post-harvest guide (2017 - 2018)$192,188
Description
The Australian Apple industry is reaching saturation point in the domestic market, hence to ensure that the industry can continue to evolve and remain economically viable there is a critical need to encourage producers to target export markets. Because of a lack of knowledge of market requirements for the various export markets, particularly amongst smaller producers, there is a need to develop and disseminate information on market requirements to the industry as a whole and keep producers informed of any changes to existing market requirements and opening of new export market destinations. In the 2014-2015 season, apple production was 311,758 tonne with a value of $507.4 million, making it the highest value fruit industry in Australia (HIA 2016). Apple exports in 2015 were only 2,134 tonne (0.7% of production). In 2016, apple exports doubled to 5,200 tonnes (analysis of ABS data by Fresh Intelligence), and was the highest export tonnage since 2006. Supporting this potential is the Tasmanian apple growers and their contribution to a targeted export potential level set under the Joint Tasmania Commonwealth Economic Council of $750m in exports by 2020.Exporting is daunting for many producers, and most arent aware of the process and protocols required. Currently there is no one-stop information and decision making guide in place to facilitate the export of Australian Apples and producers struggle to locate the required information and protocols, resulting in a barrier to exporting. Australian apple producers critically need a process that accurately provides high quality information to achieve the target volumes set and the ability to service highly profitable demand driven markets. To assist producers, Fruit Growers Tasmania Inc. (FGT) in conjunction with the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA) will develop an Australian Apple Export Manual and Post-Harvest Guide. This document will be accessible to all apple producers across Australia, and will provide a step-by-step reference guide to exporting apples to both Protocol and Non-Protocol Countries; including a resource framework and all information required within each step.
