Ted's research interest is integrating biophysical and social research methods to solve problems in environmental management and policy with a particular emphasis on the offsite environmental impacts of agriculture.
Biography
After graduating with a degree in agricultural science from the University of Western Australia Ted worked for 15 years in agricultural extension and rural development in Queensland and Papua New Guinea. On returning to Western Australia, Ted held research positions with the WA Department of Agriculture, The University of Western Australia and CSIRO studying the environmental impacts of agriculture. His interest in the potential of agroforestry and other perennial plant-based farming systems to restore ecosystem function in areas affected by soil salinity, erosion and habitat loss led to a PhD and editing the book Agriculture as a Mimic of Natural Ecosystems published by Kluwer in 2000. In 2005 Ted moved to the University of Tasmania to take up the position of Director of the Centre for Environment. In that role he worked closely with researchers from TIA as well as geographers, ecologists, economists and social researchers to assess the effectiveness of publicly funded programs designed to improve water quality and nature conservation in agricultural landscapes and develop approaches for landscape scale management of biodiversity.

Research Themes
Ted’s research aligns with the University’s Environment, Resources and Sustainability research theme. Between 2005-2015, Ted led two large interdisciplinary projects funded by the Australian Government Department of Environment, the Landscape Logic and Landscapes and Policy research hubs. The first set out to assess the effectiveness of publicly funded environmental restoration projects funded through Landcare and the Natural Heritage Trust designed to improve vegetation condition and water quality in agricultural catchments. The second project produced a series of tools and techniques to assist conservation managers take a landscape scale approach to biodiversity conservation. This included a model to predict the spread of feral animals in protected areas; a remote sensing method to identify potential refuges for plants and animals vulnerable to climate change and a model for designing wildlife corridors based on the movement patterns and foraging behaviour of target species – see www.lifeatlarge.edu.au
Collaboration
Ted has worked with research collaborators in farming systems and land management from The Land Institute in Salina Kansas, the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique in Montpelier, France, The University of Vermont USA, the University of Washington USA, The Swedish Agricultural University, Upsalla, the Australian National University, Melbourne University, Charles Sturt University, RMIT University, The University of Queensland, The University of Western Australia and CSIRO.

Publications
Ted has been recognised nationally and internationally for bringing ecological and historical perspectives to agricultural land management through three related themes, undertaken with the aim of better adapting agriculture to the Australian environment:
1) Comparative studies of ecological processes in agricultural and natural ecosystems as a basis for designing sustainable farming systems
2) Developing and experimentally testing at scale the productivity and ecological processes of perennial farming systems that combine endemic, exotic, woody and herbaceous perennial plants with conventional annual agricultural crop and pasture plants
3) Studies of the nature conservation values of farming systems and agricultural landscapes at plot, paddock, catchment and regional scales.

- Description
- This study will explore the extent to which contemporary social, economic and administrative boundaries share features with the original nine Tasmanian Aboriginal nation boundaries. Our aimis to testthe hypothesis that aspects of the island's geography, history and culture continue to influence the social, economic and educational status and oppportunites of its people.

- Description
- This is a large program focussing on the health and resilience of the Alpine Sphagnum Bogs and associated fens, aiming to conserve and protect this important and sensitive vegetation community. The objectives are to determine the elements and influences that affect the impact of fire on Peatlands and their condition It will develop objectives for alpine Peatland condition and prioritise spatially alpine Peatlands for conservation and protection.
