Tina Acuna
Associate Dean Learning & Teaching
College of Sciences and Engineering
Room 304 , Life Sciences Building
Professor Tina Acuña is the Associate Dean Learning and Teaching Performance for the College of Sciences and Engineering at the University of Tasmania. She teaches and undertakes research in high rainfall cropping systems in the Agriculture and Food Systems discipline. Tina led the development of national Learning and Teaching Academic Standards for Agriculture in higher education. She was the recipient of an Australian Award: Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning in 2016. Tina was the inaugural joint Australian Deans of Science Fellowship in 2019, with Dr Jo-Anne Kelder.
Biography
Tina graduated with undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Agricultural Science from the University of Tasmania. She subsequently undertook postdoctoral fellowships with CSIRO Plant Industry in Perth, Western Australia, and at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines. A research fellowship followed at the University of Western Australia. Her research in this period focused on the response of cereals to drought.
The offer of a lectureship in Crop Science drew Tina home to Tasmania in 2007. Since then, her research has focused on yield improvement of grain crops in high rainfall farming systems. Along the way, Tina has developed a complementary interest in the scholarship of learning and teaching, and has led the development of national Learning and Teaching Academic Standards for Agriculture. Funded by the Office for Learning and Teaching, this project has been undertaken in collaboration with three interstate universities and involved consultation with academics, students and industry across Australia. The standards are endorsed by the Australian Council of Deans of Agriculture and were officially launched in March 2015. The standards aim to help universities design and deliver programs that meet agreed standards, attract more students and produce skilled graduates.
Tina was the inaugural joint Australian Deans of Science Fellowship in 2019, with Dr Jo-Anne Kelder. The Fellowship embedded leadership for active engagement in scholarship within teaching teams by contextualising the Curriculum Evaluation Research (CER) framework for the specific characteristics of STEM degrees and teaching teams. The CER-STEM framework supports team-based planning and doing activities that are aligned with institutional structures, processes, and governance instruments, so that scholarship can be made visible, monitored, measured, met, and reported at the level of degree curriculum.

- Description
- The joint Fellowship (Acuna, Kelder) embeds leadership for active engagement in scholarship within teaching teams. The project is a response to Higher Education Standards Framework (HESF) minimum requirements for continuous evaluation informing ongoing curriculum transformation, specifically the TEQSA Guidance Note: Scholarship (2018). It will contextualise the existing Curriculum Evaluation Research (CER) framework (Kelder & Carr 2017) for the specific characteristics of STEM degrees and teaching teams. The framework supports team-based planning and doing activities that are aligned with institutional structures, processes and governance instruments, so that scholarship can be made visible, monitored, measured, met and reported at the level of degree curriculum. The project outputs will include national workshops for six institutional partners, a STEM specific CER framework, a website presenting the framework, dissemination outputs, and sharing of case studies and resources developed during the fellowship. Longer-term outputs will be a greater % of STEM academics engaged positively in scholarship and an improved curriculum.HERDC research

- Future growth and prosperity of the production horticulture industry in Australia will continue to rely a resilient, adaptable and innovate workforce that is equipped to change with industry demands. Many horticultural industry leaders have identified a need for specialised and flexible training opportunities to enhance the broader workforce. The University of Tasmania, through the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture, has arguably Australias best integrated horticultural RD&E and education and training framework. The University of Tasmania will utilise combined strength and reputation with that of Lincoln University (NZ) in agribusiness, and the experience of the Wageningen Academy to develop and deliver a Global Master Class in horticulture that gains a premium reputation nationally and internationally within 5 years. This will involve working closely with Hort Innovation and Wageningen Academy to fashion a high-quality course with the appropriate flexible delivery styles and formats that meet the demand of industry. This collaborative and innovative approach to education and training will be evaluated through research in learning and teaching, and the insights gained will inform approaches to professional development in the Australian horticulture industry. This new knowledge will be communicated in professional and disciplinary conferences and publications.

- This project will develop a key resource, the SMARTfarm Learning Hub that will increase the skill base of higher education students using a range of new agricultural technologies and innovations. It will consist of a central landing web-page linking real industry cloud based technologies with educator resources and student learning packages. This will give higher education providers and their students online access to data and systems from commercial scale smart-farms across Australia.

- Description
- The contribution from the High Rainfall Zone (HRZ) of southern Australia to national grain production has doubled for wheat and increased tenfold for canola over the past 20 years. This trend is expected to continue as demand for food increases and production becomes marginal in the lower rainfall regions due to a more variable climate. However, field experiments and modelling indicate that crop yields could be doubled in this zone through the introduction of better adapted germ plasm and improved management practises. This project will provide knowledge and tools to increase the profitability of wheat and canola in the HRZs of the Southern and Western grains regions. An increased understanding of Genotype by Environment byManagement Interactions will help identify superior, better adapted wheat and canola germplasm. This will increase the speed at which new varieties are available to growers either through direct importation from overseas breeding programs or through the incorporation of traits into breeding material specifically suited to the HRZ. Modelling will help quantify the value of new traits to industry. Using a Participatory Action Research approach together with field data and modelling, tools will be developed to help understand the risks and opportunities associated with applying costly inputs to crops with high yield potential.
