Dr. Tracey Ann Cuin is a plant cell physiologist working in the Stress Physiology Group of Prof. Sergey Shabala. Her goal is to increase crop productivity under suboptimal conditions while improving nutrient use efficiency in agricultural systems.

Biography

Tracey was previously at UTAS in Prof. Shabala’s team from 2004-2010 and returned to the invigorated and revitalised TIA at the beginning of 2017.

In the time between, she received a three year EU FP7 Marie Curie International Reintegration Fellowship to work at INRA/CNRS in Montpellier, France investigating electrical signalling in plants. Subsequently, she was in Prof. Dr. Rainer Hedrich’s lab in Würzburg, Germany investigating the transporters responsible for sucrose accumulation in sugar beet.

Prior to 2004, Tracey obtained her PhD from Bangor University, UK, and was an EU post-doctoral fellow for three years at Rothamsted Research, UK investigating the disruption to intracellular potassium homeostasis by salinity in barley. Afterwards she spent four years at University of Cambridge, UK researching nitrogen accumulation, assimilation and storage in barley, followed by 15 months at Stavanger University, Norway exploring the role of the circadian rhythm in plant nitrate assimilation.

Tracey is now working on an ARC-funded project with Prof. Shabala and Prof. Hedrich looking at the regulation of stomatal operation in the halophyte and “fashion food” crop, Quinoa.

Research Themes

With her goal of increasing crop productivity, sustainable and viably, particularly under adverse environmental conditions, Tracey’s research aligns to the University’s research theme of Environment, Resources and Sustainability.

Dr. Cuin’s expertise is in stress physiology and membrane ion transport, and she uses a range of electrophysiological, single-cell analytical, biochemical and molecular techniques, combining these with whole-plant phenotyping to increase knowledge of plant adaptive responses to environmental stress and to decrease fertiliser requirements.

Collaboration

Due to her mobility, Tracey has a large world-wide network of collaborations. Her current active collaborations are with Germany, UK, Chile, France, USA, Denmark, and nationally, with Universities of Adelaide and Western Australia in particular.

Current projects

Biological nitrification inhibition in temperate pastures (Prof Mark Hovenden, Plant Science and Prof. Richard Rawnsley) An investigation into the biological nitrification inhibitor activity of perennial ryegrass, the world’s most widely used temperate pasture grass and the major species used in Australia’s dairy industry.

Coping with extremes: molecular and physiological mechanisms of stomatal operation in halophytes (Prof Shabala and Prof Hedrich, University of Würzburg, Germany) The aim is to understand the regulation of stomatal movements and to determine factors behind superior photosynthetic gas exchange in the halophyte quinoa under saline conditions.
