Ebba Herrlander Birgerson is a PhD candidate in Policing and Emergency Management, in the School of Social Sciences, and a researcher with the Tasmanian Institute of Law Enforcement Studies (TILES). Ebba’s research explores evidence-based policing, the pathways and barriers to desistance from crime, and the role of police in promoting desistance and diverting vulnerable people from the criminal justice system. It builds on aspects of her Masters’ thesis which examined the importance of support and accommodation in the reintegration process and the impacts of removing a Tasmanian transitional support program on incarcerated persons and service providers.

Biography

Ebba completed her Bachelor of Criminology & Criminal Justice at Griffith University in 2016 and  joined the University of Tasmania in 2017 to commence a Master of Police Studies. Her master’s thesis 'A Real Gap’: Consequences of Defunding Tasmania’s Reintegration for Ex-Offenders’ Program examined the impacts of removing a transitional support service on currently and previously incarcerated persons, service providers, and the community as a whole. The thesis explored the importance of accommodation and support in reintegration, as well as the cycle of program churn – programs being defunded and reinstated later – to document what is lost during the process. She has since assisted in several research projects within the University of Tasmania and with external government and non-government organisations, making strong connections with stakeholders such as the Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management and the Department of Premier and Cabinet. Ebba is also a marker for the School of Social Sciences, and the unit coordinator for a Professional Honours unit linked with the promotional pathways of Victorian and Tasmanian police officers.
