Dr Ayton leads a dynamic academic teaching and research program (Health and Society) at the Tasmanian School of Medicine, University of Tasmania. Her research focuses on family, maternal and reproductive health, infant feeding, rural health, and the use of arts-based methods. Jenn is a qualitative, mixed methods researcher collaborating with a diverse range of partners across public health, sociology, creative arts, medicine, criminology, nursing, and the community and government sectors.
Biography
Dr Ayton is an academic program lead and rising expert in qualitative Art and Health mixed-methods research at the Tasmanian School of Medicine, University of Tasmania, Hobart. She is a senior lecturer in Public Health and leads the undergraduate medical degree Health and Society curriculum teaching team. Her research focuses on family, maternal and reproductive health, infant feeding, rural health, and the use of arts-based methods. As a social scientist with a Ph.D. in Sociology, Master of Research (Midwifery), Registered Midwife/Nurse, she brings 35 years of extensive rural and remote, midwifery/nursing expertise to her research and teaching portfolios. Jen has published widely in leading international journals and is known for using visual arts to translate and disseminate her research into artworks for public consultation. She collaboratively works with a wide range of stakeholders, government, and non-government organisations. Her research has informed government policy such as the national breastfeeding and maternal health recommendations.

Research Themes
Jennifer’s research aligns with the University’s research themes of Better Health and Creative Culture and Society. Her research aims to be interdisciplinary across sociology and public health and include understanding the complexities and social determents surrounding maternal and paternal health, infant feeding practices namely breastfeeding, including the father’s role in infant feeding, and primary and public health. Jennifer is also working on more creative ways to translate research evidence and engage the broader community in conversations around infant feeding and breastfeeding and how to reconceptualise breastfeeding as a family practice. She uses a mixture of approaches including social theory, qualitative and quantitative data.

- This project aims to train community members in the area of trauma-informed practice. This is a pilot project that is looking at the extent to which the training lay community members in trauma-informed practice helps support the work of specialised service delivery. The target issue is domestic violence, although consideration is made of such related issues as drug and alcohol use and mental ill-health. This pilot project is specifically based in Huonville.
