Angus Thompson
Lecturer in Therapeutics and Pharmacy Practice
Room 3008 , Pharmacy Building
Angus relocated from the UK to Australia and joined the University of Tasmania in 2008. During his career, Angus has amassed a wealth of experience drawn from roles in hospital, community, consultancy, general practice and academic pharmacy. Angus’s significant contribution to the pharmacy profession was acknowledged when he was named Tasmanian Pharmacist of the Year in 2017.
Biography
Angus's career started in the UK as an NHS hospital pharmacist, followed by six years in a private hospital pharmacy management position. This was followed by nine years as a prescribing advisor, during which time he worked with four NHS primary care organisations and over 50 general practices promoting evidence based and cost-effective prescribing. For the last six of these years, Angus’s advisory work was just one component of a broader portfolio of roles, including work as a visiting lecturer at three universities, pharmaceutical writing, project management and locum community pharmacy work.
For over a decade after joining the University of Tasmania in 2008, Angus led delivery of high-quality Therapeutics teaching to BPharm students, taught into a number of other units in the program, and was involved in Quality Use of Medicines research aligning with the University of Tasmania's 'Better Health' theme.
Angus now dedicates most of his time to work as a Consultant Clinical Pharmacist undertaking Home Medicines Reviews (HMRs) in Southern Tasmania and has recently passed the milestone of undertaking his 2000th HMR. Alongside this work, Angus is also a Clinical Editor for Primary Health Tasmania, a casual pharmacist at the Royal Hobart Hospital and a subject matter expert for the Australian Pharmacy Council.
Alongside these roles, Angus continues to contribute to clinical teaching in the BPharm program, instilling his passion for patient-centred pharmacy practice into the next generation of UTAS Pharmacy graduates.

Research Themes
Angus's research relates to the Better Health theme and aligns with the Quality Use of Medicines (QUM) aspect of Australia's National Medicines Policy. Angus's most active research area is rational use of antimicrobials, especially in the community, which is where the majority of antibiotics are used, but ironically where there are the least controls. Without action, the impact of antimicrobial resistance is likely to be felt even more acutely than it already is, placing a huge burden on individual patients and the wider health system and society. Angus also has research interests in the management of pain, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and airways disease, again with the focus on improving QUM.
Current projects
Angus is currently leading a team of clinicians and academics evaluating the impact of a Quick Reference Guide (QRG) to antibiotic prescribing amongst General Practice registrars. Initial work has signalled positive impacts and the latest phase of this work, which commenced in March 2020 seeks to provide more definitive data.

- Description
- Chronic opioid use for persistent pain is skyrocketing and is associated with substantial patient harm. This study will review what the risk of chronic opioid use is following a supply of an opioid at discharge from the Royal Hobart Hospital and make recommendations to improve the way opioids are prescribed.

- Description
- This project is a prospective, cross sectional study designed to ascertain patient or management factors that increase the risk of developing PPP, with the objective of designing a predictive model to identify high risk PPP candidates. PPP will be defined as pain at the surgical site 3 months after surgery, with severe pain being defined as 5 or more on a 10-point scale. The project involves recruitment of patients, surveys, medical chart data collection, inclusion criteria, exclusion criteria, sample size, data analysis, and assessment of variables.
