Collaboration

Tabish has a number of current research collaborations in Australia and overseas. Locally, he is leading a collaborative research project to implement pneumonia guidelines in Tasmanian public hospitals. Tabish has actively engaged infectious diseases physicians, pharmacists and emergency medicine specialists across Tasmanian hospitals for this project. Tabish is also currently collaborating with the National Centre on Antimicrobial Stewardship (NCAMS) and leading the Australia's first study of assessing the confidence and knowledge of the future medical workforce of Australia. Apart from NCAMS's director, the Dean of the Medical School at the University of Melbourne is also a collaborator on this particular project.

Tabish also has a number of current international collaborations. Multi-drug resistant (MDR) gram negative bacterial infections are common in Saudi Hospitals. Building on a previous collaborative project, Tabish is
collaborating with academics from Dammam University and consultants of infectious diseases and critical care from National Guards Health Affairs (NGHA) on improving antibiotic prescribing in multi-drug resistant infections. Tabish has recently been appointed as an honorary research fellow at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), South Africa. He is collaborating with academics at UKZN on the extension of his original research about the effectiveness of low dose colistin in the treatment of MDR gram negative bacterial infection. This particular collaboration is between UKZN and NGHA, where Tabish is supervising a Masters student on improving colistin use in the treatment of MDR gram negative bacterial infections at the NGHA hospitals.

Projects

Continuous infusion of cephalosporins in elastomeric devices: physical, chemical and microbial stability (2018)$9,339
Description
Administration of intravenous antibiotics by patients using home infusion (elastomeric) devices is growing. Cephalosporins are one of the commonly used antibiotics and their stability in elastomeric infusion devices is lacking. This project will measure the physical, chemical and microbial stability of cephalosporins to enable their use in such devices.

In vitro stability of ceftolozane/tazobactam in different types of peritoneal dialysis solutions (2018 - 2020)$26,851
Description
To date, there is no data available for the intraperitoneal administration of ceftolozane/tazobactam (C/T), the preferred and recommended route of administration of antibiotics in patients with peritoneal dialysis associated peritonitis. For an antibiotic to be administered intra-peritoneally, it needs to be stable in peritoneal dialysis solutions. Intraperitoneal administration of antibiotics to treat systemic infections [other than PDAP] in patients where administration of systemic antibiotics is impractical, is a routine clinical practice though the evidences are limited. The results of the proposed study may provide the stability information for clinicians to make such a choice where systemic administration of C/T is impractical by administering it intraperitoneally in patients that need it.

Variability in plasma concentration of glucosamine in osteoarthritis patients taking various glucosamine formulations. (2017)$9,837
Description
Glucosamine is often taken by patients with osteoarthritis, with patients varying in their clinical response. This variation may be due to differences in absorption of the compound, which is known to be poorly absorbed. This study will investigate plasma levels, with a newly developed analytical procedure, in individuals taking glucosamine.

Improving clinical outcomes by increasing concordance with antibiotic guidelines for Community Acquired Pneumonia (CAP). (2014)$59,250
Description
CAP leads to 60,000 hospital admissions in Australia annually and 3,000 deaths. Compliance with CAP guidelines is known to be low in Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH). UTAS and RHH have been developing guidelines, clinical pathways for emergency doctors and education for professionals about the pathway and the guidelines. Mortality rates at RHH have come down significantly since the UTAS and RHH work. Research will implement the RHH known strategy into the other Tasmanian Health Organisations (THOs). Educational components will improve the knowledge of the clinical workforce re optimal use of antibiotics in the management of CAP.

Research Supervision

Tabish has mentored three pharmacists during his hospital appointments over the last five years and all of them are working as clinical pharmacists in hospital settings. Soon after joining the University of Tasmania, Tabish was made the course coordinator of Master of Clinical Pharmacy (MClinPharm) program. Most enrolled students in the MClinPharm have no experience in research prior to joining this course and Tabish is responsible for their supervision. Within the last two years, four students have completed their research projects under Tabish's supervision and five more students are completing their projects. Tabish is also supervising an Honour's student on a project aiming to improve vancomycin prescribing in gram positive bacterial infections at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Tabish is also currently supervising five higher degree by research (HDR) students on translational research. Three students' projects are based in hospital settings whereas the remaining two students have their projects based in community settings. The first of the three students in hospital settings is studying the role of clinical pathways and doctors' education in improving the management of pneumonia. The second of the students is working on the role of consultant pharmacist in preventing unplanned re-admissions to the hospital related to adverse drug reactions. The third student is looking at simplifying medication regimen complexity in chronic diseases to improve patients' compliance to medications. Two of the remaining HDR students are working on translational research projects in community settings. The first student is investigating the role of the pharmacist in early detection and prevention of chronic kidney diseases. The second student is focusing on the role of pharmacist in preventing unplanned emergency department visit of patients presenting to community pharmacies during after hours.
