Dr Claire Eccleston is a Senior Lecturer in Dementia Care in the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre. She has a keen interest in dementia education. She brings experience in quantitative and mixed methods research relating to the assessment of knowledge, attitudes, and health literacy about dementia and dementia risk reduction, the development, validation, and translation of related survey instruments, and the evaluation of the effectiveness of education across multiple modes such as massive open online courses, online undergraduate courses, training of health and care professionals, and clinical placements.
Biography
Dr Eccleston has a PhD in quantitative ecology from Griffith University, Queensland. After returning to Tasmania, she worked part time as a Research Fellow on the Wicking Teaching Aged Care Facilities Program from 2011 to 2015, leading the evaluation component of the second part of this program between 2013-2015. The program aimed to prototype Teaching Aged Care Facilities by providing healthcare students with a quality clinical placement in residential aged care. Dr Eccleston’s work has included the development, validation and translation of a number of validated and psychometrically sound scales to investigate dementia knowledge (DKAS), dementia literacy (CAAASI-Dem), dementia risk reduction knowledge (KoDeRR), and public dementia stigma (DePSS). Claire has been a full-time lecturer with the Dementia Care degree program since 2016, and is currently Course coordinator of the Bachelor and Diploma of Dementia Care. In 2017, Claire led an investigation of dementia knowledge and education needs in the Tasmanian community and since then has been a member of teams investigating the attitudes, experiences and knowledge needs of the current and future health and care workforce. She is currently an investigator on multiple projects such as a major project to increase awareness of traumatic brain injury and the ISLAND project which aims to understand how we can promote behavioural change to reduce risk of dementia.

- Description
- This research directly promotes knowledge and development of skills in person-centered dementia care and palliative care of the person with advanced dementia at end of life. The project will support knowledge of advanced dementia, skill development in pain assessment and gentle massage techniques. Staff will be supported in learning about the Namaste CareTM program principles and elements of care and shown simple and practical ways to provide compassionate, person-centred care aimed at promoting comfort and engaging residents in meaningful activities to improve quality of life. There has been little rigorous evaluation done in the Australian context on the efficacy of Namaste Care education to prepare staff for implementation and delivery of the Namaste CareTM program. To this end, this study will deliver knowledge and skill enhancement to prepare aged care staff for the Namaste CareTM program for people living with advanced dementia in an aged care facility in Northern Tasmania with implications for wider service delivery through ongoing training and development of aged care staff in end-of-life dementia care.

- Description
- The proposal has outstanding levels of community engagement. The team has allocated time (milestone indicators) and resources (budget) for extended community engagement at all stages of the project making the proposal highly feasible. Additionally, we have already established relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre (TAC) and CI Schramm have assisted with the design of the project and TAC have agreed to host at least one Aboriginal health worker for the duration of this project. In addition, TAC has confirmed the transferability of the skills (e.g. communication, analysis, education design) gained from working on this project are highly desirable for future research and education programs. The incidence of TBI in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is almost twice the national average this means urgent attention is needed to increase awareness and educate. Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre (TAC) has indicated to the research team that brain injury awareness and education are a priority for their communities. Our research proposal aims to not only establish awareness of TBI but also the lived experience of those who have sustained a TBI. Accounts can be captured in their language making the applicability to others in the community stronger. These personal accounts may also identify areas of need for specific educational programs, which are culturally appropriate and can be developed in consultation with the local communities.

- Description
- This project explores dementia-related presentations to the RHH to inform the development of new clinical pathways to reduce preventable and unplanned hospital transfers that are costly and have poor outcomes for people with dementia. Care pathways from RACFs and community settings to the RHH will be reviewed.
