Summary

In a climate of continuous workplace change, we all need to actively manage our career. More than 50% of PhD candidates will find work outside of academia. In this workshop we will focus on the skills acquired from a PhD and how they can be applied in and outside of an academic career.

Career Empowerment workshop

Researcher Development is offering Higher Degree Researchers the opportunity to attend a career empowerment workshop with Peter Tatham. The workshop would ideally suit candidates who are in their final year and looking to a future beyond their PhD. 

Over the past 30 years, Peter has provided individual career coaching to more than 5000 clients from education, government, community and the private sector. He has written and presented over 300 workshops, webinars and online programs. 

The workshop will include the following components:  

  • An overview of career development and the impact of change
  • Careers (inside and outside academia)
  • Developing an effective career story
  • Thinking like a career entrepreneur
  • Review of career management skills
  • Review of work values
  • SWOT analysis
  • Review of skills that developed in your PhD
  • HDR employability and transferable skills
  • Networking, informational interviews and exploring opportunities in Tasmania and elsewhere
  • Improving presentation (resumes, selection criteria and interviews)
  • Next step actions, entrepreneurial career strategies and SMART career goals

Peter will use a career entrepreneurship framework to explore opportunities through networking and to develop career strategies. There will also be a focus on enhancing job applications and interview preparation.

And all participants will have the opportunity for a confidential 30 minute one on one discussion with Peter, either in person, by phone or by Skype. (Appointment details will be available at registration).
