Building Better Relationships

A lot of the literature on PhD success names a good supervision relationship as being important for success. So how can we influence the quality of these relationships from our student position? Data gathered from a research study into HDR student-supervisor relationships informs this session, as well as drawing on the literature on trust building at work. We will look at what makes someone trustworthy, and how we can cultivate trust, by building professional relationships. The session acknowledges and builds on the pre-existing supervision experiences of participants and offers a chance to reflect on what is working and what could be changed for the better. Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Review the concept of trust as an indicator of good staff-student relationships;
  • Use a framework of trust to think about the utility of this in their own supervision relationships;
  • Discuss the specific behaviours they can employ to building trust with their supervisors.
