Building Trust in Staff-Student Relationships

This session is for HDR supervisors. There is a vast body of literature documenting supervision styles and practices, much of which names trust as a vital component of good supervisory relationships. But what is trust, and how do we build it? Data gathered from two research studies (1) HDR student-supervisor relationships and (2) Academic tutoring relationships, informs this session, as well as drawing on the literature on trust.

Participants will have time to consider at what makes us trustworthy, and how we can cultivate two-way trust with students. The session acknowledges and builds on the pre-existing HDR supervision and UG tutoring experiences of participants and offers a chance to reflect on what works in practice. Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Review the concept of trust as an indicator of good staff-student relationships;
  • Use a framework of trust to think about the utility of this in their own supervision and tutoring relationships;
  • Discuss the specific behaviours they can employ to building trust with their students.
