About the research project

The evolution of land plants has been characterized by major transitions in the ways that plants regulate their hydration. Many bryophytes are characterized by desiccation-tolerance, while flowering plants tend to maintain their hydration within very narrow margins. This project aims to understand the prerequisites and trade offs associated with different water regulation strategies in representative bryophytes, ferns, conifers and angiosperms. Strategies will be characterized using anatomical and physiological techniques to measure traits associated with different strategies and to understand their relationships. A focus in water transport, water use, desiccation tolerance, osmotic regulation and photosynthetic performance will provide a detailed insight into the benefits and limitations of contrasting strategies employed across the land plant phylogeny.

Funding

Applicants will be considered for a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship or Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarship (TGRS) which, if successful, provides:

  • a living allowance stipend of $31,500 per annum (2023 rate, indexed annually) for 3.5 years
  • a relocation allowance of up to $2,000
  • a tuition fees offset covering the cost of tuition fees for up to four years (domestic applicants only)

If successful, international applicants will receive a University of Tasmania Fees Offset for up to four years.
