Tasmania is facing phenomenal growth in tourism. While the industry is still stimulating economic development, there are also challenges. Small businesses are growing but increased visitor numbers has been blamed for overcrowding, and the community complains over the future of tourism in Tasmania. Has Tasmania reached its capacity for tourism?

This discussion will consider what sustainable tourism means for Tasmania, where the pressure points of tourism growth lie, and how these should be managed.

About Can Seng Ooi

Professor Can Seng Ooi is a sociologist and Professor of Cultural and Heritage Tourism at the University of Tasmania. For more than two decades he did comparative research on Denmark, Singapore, Malaysia and China. He has always been concerned with the social cultural impact of tourism. He moved to Tasmania 18 months ago.

About Anne Hardy

Dr Anne Hardy is the Director of the Tourism Research and Education Network (TRENd) at the University of Tasmania.  Anne grew up in Tasmania before moving to Queensland, where she undertook her PhD at the University of Queensland. Following graduation Dr Hardy worked at the University of Tasmania, and then the University of Northern British Columbia, where she worked in the Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Management Program. In 2007, she returned to the University of Tasmania where she is currently employed.

Dr Hardy is currently undertaking research in three areas: the neo-tribal behaviour of tourists; sustainable tourism; and tracking tourists’ movement using integrated GPS tracking and survey technology. She is the lead investigator on the Tourism Tracer project that has received international acclaim and won numerous awards; it is the first research project to track tourists across an entire destination for the duration of their stay.

Dr Hardy’s research has been published widely in academic journals, books and via a variety of media channels. Her approach to research seeks to extend knowledge in a two way direction between the tourism industry and academia.

About Chris Griffin

Following a successful career in tourism and travel managing small and large commercial businesses in New Zealand, Chris relocated to Tasmania, the home State of wife Phoebe. As the founding CEO of Tourism Northern Tasmania, he has worked through multiple partnerships, to achieve some of the region’s biggest wins over the last five years.

Chris has lead the TNT team to win distinction for destination marketing at both the State and National tourism awards; facilitated partnerships to create the Great Chefs Series, establish a cool season events strategy to attract more sporting tournaments and major events to the region; worked with councils and community on local initiatives of State significance such as Blue Derby, a luxury cruise terminal at Beauty Point; hosting the National Tourism Awards in March 2019 and enabled the investigation of ‘Projected Story-telling in Cataract Gorge’, a future night-time visitor experience.

He flies the Northern tourism flag in all areas of life, be it on board positions with Cityprom and Northern Tasmania Development Corporation (NTDC), through to the Rotary Club of Central Launceston. He’s passionate about attracting events and visitors to the city to benefit the whole region.
