Institute Insights

The Institute for Social Change has launched a new research series called Institute Insights, focusing on social and economic change in Tasmania and beyond. The aim is to promote community discussion and policy debate.

With the Tasmanian economy in transition, our initial focus is on the changing nature of work in Tasmania; which industry sectors and regions are growing, who is being employed and on what basis. Understanding these complex dynamics is vital for government, business and the wider community.

Housing Reports

The Institute is committed to delivering world class research on social change and to make a contribution to a more equitable, prosperous and sustainable society. Tasmania is the perfect site to study social change and develop and trial innovative responses.

No policy challenge is more acute in Tasmania than housing and our research aims to inform policy makers and the general public on the best way to achieve safe, secure and suitable housing for every person living in this state.

It has been a busy and productive period since the Institute for Social Change was established in April 2014 and we’re thrilled to be able to share some of our achievements and outline some of our plans for the future in our annual reports.

Achievements in 2018

  • The Institute for the Study of Social Change (ISC) expanded its policy research collaborations with a range of key partners, securing $1.35 million in new research funding to support this work.
  • We published nine policy research papers and produced five parliamentary submissions. These included six Insight policy reports and three housing reports/updates. We also held five policy workshops.
  • Our media impact featured 450 media mentions, with an audience reach of 4.3 million, a $2.5 million equivalent advertising value.
  • The ISC continued its events and community engagement through 14 research seminars and 13 public forums and lectures. Our audience reach was 5000 attendees and 1500 online views.

  • The ISC has played a central role in securing $4.2 million in external research funding since being established in mid-2014.
  • The ISC now supports an active network of 234 researchers spanning the University of Tasmania’s colleges, faculties and institutes, a 30% increase since 2015/2016.
  • From July 2016 to July 2017 the ISC held 34 public events, as well as a weekly academic seminar series, connecting the wider community to the ISC and to the University as a whole. Total attendance at our public events was approximately 3500, in addition to an increasing number of people opting to view events online. The ISC has embraced the opportunity to record and live-stream our larger events, which provides a lasting archive of the expertise and debate on offer.
  • In 2016/2017 the Institute produced more than 107 contributions to local, national and international media with an audience reach of more than 2.6 million.

  • Increased affiliated researchers from 2014/2015 by almost 100%.
  • ISC affiliated researchers have secured over $2.1 million in competitive funding for research.
  • Hosted 80 public events – an increase of 100% on 2014/2015 events. ISC events attracted an overall audience of more than 3,000.
  • ISC leads a national, multi-institutional research project on Pathways to Housing Tax Reform with funding of $500,000 from Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI).
