UTAS Hockey players represent Tasmania on the national stage

The Tasmanian University Hockey Club (TUHC) was magnificently represented at the recent Australian Hockey Championships, held in early April. Nine TUHC players were selected to compete for Tasmania across two competitions; the Under-15 Outdoor Championships in Bathurst, New South Wales, and the Under-18 Outdoor Championships held here in Launceston.

TUHC players Sam Meikle, Oscar Sproule and William Sproule arrived home from Bathurst with some extra silverware after helping lead Tasmania to a silver medal finish in the Under-15 Boys Championship, an excellent result and reflection of their hard work and dedication.

In a very competitive championship, Prue Clark, Emily Bushby and Holly Teale showed great determination and spirit to contribute to Tasmania’s 11th place finish in the Under-15 Girls Championship.

TUHC’s dedicated coaching staff were also represented on the national stage with Trent Sproule and Brodie Foster coaching the Tasmanian Under-15 Boys and Girls Championships respectively.

In Launceston, the Under-18s tournament was excellently directed by TUHC’s very own Greer Wells, and well umpired by Aaron Kitchener, also a TUHC representative.

Reigning Under-18 Men’s Best and Fairest winner Sam Payne was TUHC’s lone representative in Tasmania’s Under-18s side and showed great skill, scoring a goal in Tasmania’s 1-1 draw against Victoria Development. Tasmania finished in 7th position in the Men’s Under-18 Championship and were also awarded the Play the Whistle Award.

For the Women’s side, Ansa Le Grange and Izzie McRobbie excelled as Tasmania finished the Championships in 5th place.

After having the 2020 Australian Championships cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ansa Le Grange said she and her teammates were excited to get back out onto the field and show what they can do.

“We take our competition very seriously and it is also valuable to compete against the other states. Each bring their own style and dynamics to the game and we can learn from each other. I feel very lucky to have been a part of something so special”, Ansa commented.

“Our team is still young and we have big hopes for next year. We are going for gold!”

We are already counting down until the next Championships!
