Held November 12th in celebration of our student’s achievements this year.
University clubs, student athletes and partners of the University of Tasmania all gathered to celebrate the amazing results and accomplishments achieved by our student athletes in 2019.
The evening was filled with accolades including multiple Blues Awards, the Sports Council Award, Sport Club of the Year and finally the Sport Person of the Year.
Multiple nominations for Blues Awards were put forward for individual efforts this year with several sports represented. This included rowing, athletics, futsal and football (soccer) with a total of fourteen awards distributed to worthy athletes including Tasmanian Institute of Sport Scholarship holders Eleni Kalimnios and Jane Hickie.
In consecutive years, the University of Tasmania Cricket Club received top honour by taking out the Sport Club of the Year award. This award was well deserved following a year of impressive membership growth and focus on migrant communities and multicultural competitions.
2019 saw an incredible increase in student representation of the University of Tasmania at Unisport National events with our teams doubling in size from 2018. With many students present on the night, UTAS took the opportunity to thank and highlight their exciting results and we look forward to what they can achieve in 2020.
As a finale, the Sport Person of the Year (sponsored by the Commonwealth Bank Corporation) was announced. Following eight extremely high standard applications for this accolade, the winner of this prestigious award in the end was cricketer, George Bailey. George continues to perform strongly on the field with selection in global competitions, representing Tasmania and also dominating in the Big Bash League.
We wish to thank all those in attendance and look forward to an exciting 2020.
