Houston’s Farm win Study Tasmania Award
It was exciting to see one of our Leap program partners Houston’s Farm be recognised as Industry Partner of the Year at the recent Study Tasmania Shine Awards 2019. Houston’s Farm received the award in recognition of the experience they have given to international students as part of the I-PREP program – UTAS’s work preparation program for international students.
Houston’s Farm have been involved as an industry partner in the University of Tasmania’s international student work preparation program, I-PREP, since 2018. They have hosted seven I-PREP internship students working across different business units. I-PREP students have been able to experience different facets of farm life from farm operations through the corporate aspects to support a commercial farm production facility.
Houston’s management have been very flexible with the experiences they have been able to offer students, often retrofitting a placement to the skills and interest of the student. They have also assisted the program by offering a placement at short notice for a student who was graduating when another organisation was unable to host.
Houston’s staff have spoken about the value that hosting an I-PREP intern has brought to the business. Briarna Hen, General Manager – Human Resources said ‘We saw value in participating in the I-PREP program from the start, partnering with the University of Tasmania to give talented international students studying here an experience of Australian workplace culture. We embrace diversity and have a flexible workforce through both short term, seasonal employees as well as our longer-term employees.’

We recently held a breakfast event for our industry supporters of the I-PREP program (international student work preparation program). Over 60 of our hosts, or organisations interested in hosting a student in 2020, attended to hear about student and supervisor experiences.

What is Career Connect ?
Career Connect is UTAS’ online jobs portal that employers can access to advertise vacancies directly to UTAS students and graduates.
Over 30,000 UTAS students have access to the system and use it to search for local employment and volunteering opportunities.
This easy to use, free service is accessible to all employers in Tasmania. There are also a number of additional services that can be purchased to help you better advertise and target your vacancy. Meet the Leap team – Leap Industry Engagement Coordinator….
This edition we profile Penny Stringer, our Leap Industry Engagement Coordinator. Penny is focused on working with industry to better understand their recruitment needs so that the Leap program can be tailored to specific organisations. Penny has been with the UTAS Leap team since April 2018 after working at Beacon Foundation in a role focussed on College-based industry pathways.

Dear Career Connect industry partners,
I would like to thank you for the support you have shown our students through your engagement with our team and our jobs portal, Career Connect. This year has certainly thrown us some challenges - challenges that were unfathomable in 2019 – and challenges to which we have undoubtedly not seen the end of.
You may be aware that in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the University of Tasmania is now offering all courses and student services through online delivery. As part of that support our Career Connect team is working remotely and continuing to assist students to consider and develop their employability during this unprecedented time, as well as continuing to support our local businesses to recruit our top talent. In the current climate, we have ceased to deliver face-to-face industry events and programs but are exploring a range of ways to continue to offer our students opportunities to build their professional connections and experience the workforce. For example, we will be trailing digital approaches for students to network with industry through virtual internships and online mentoring.
As the COVID-19 pandemic presents us with a very new employment landscape in Tasmania, strong partnerships and active collaborations between the Career Connect team and local employers are critical. We recognise that this new landscape is having a huge effect on Tasmania, including many of our students. We have already seen many Tasmanian industries responding to the current challenges with innovation, commitment and energy. I am writing to assure you that our students and graduates are also prepared and willing to approach this new world with agility, resilience and a commitment to contribute to Tasmania. During this time, and when we emerge on the other side, we want to continue to support you to connect with talented UTAS graduates and students who are flexible, fresh, and resilient.
During this time, Career Connect will remain open and the team is available to support your recruitment needs. We will be offering free advertising and digital packaging for local employers who have advertised vacancies and we will waive all charges for jobs that are being advertised now. If you have an employment opportunity that you would like to highlight or are interested in exploring digital industry connections to support our students please let us know and we would be happy to support this.

Career Connect showcase
Thank you to all of our industry partners who attended our first Career Connect Showcase event in Hobart on Thursday 13th of February. It was also great to see some new faces coming along to hear about how our employer support service works. We were joined by representatives from the University of Tasmania’s Colleges who shared information about work integrated learning and education opportunities open to industry. We released a short video which features how some of our partners have worked with us. We are aiming to hold similar events for the north and north west of Tasmania later this year.
Engineers Australia Career Connections
We recently partnered with Engineers Australia to hold a Career Connections event that was attended by over 130 students. The event started with masterclasses on interview skills, work placements and the importance of soft skills in technical roles. Then a careers expo brought together 16 different industry representatives from the following organisations: Carlton and United Breweries, Caterpillar, Shaw Contracting, Taswater, TasNetworks, Pitt & Sherry, VEC Civil Engineering Pty Ltd, Hydro Tasmania, Nyrstar, Defence Force Recruiting, Stornoway, Careers in Local Government, Currowong Engineering, Grange Resources, Rio Tinto, and GHD. We look forward to hosting this again in 2021.
UTAS’ I-PREP program (work preparation program for international students) is running in 2020 but it will have a different structure as we move away from face to face internships, at least in the short term. We are exploring the idea of offering virtual internships to our students in the program as well as online mentoring and virtual industry networking opportunities. We have just had a successful trip up to Launceston where we talked with businesses about the program and we hope to be able to expand the program more broadly to northern organisations later this year.
Careers education for UTAS students
With students studying online and social distancing in place, we are exploring new and exciting ways to deliver careers education and opportunities to connect with industry.
We recently launched a new comprehensive and interactive online learning resource called Career Essentials. This resource is available to all students and aims to provide the student with a careers focussed education framework for the duration of their study.
Career Essentials covers a broad range of careers-related topics including how to build a resume, write a cover letter and selection criteria, prepare and practice interviews and networking tips. It also provides students with work ready experiences to enhance their studies including jobs on campus, internships, volunteering and leadership development.
Opportunities for Virtual Engagement
In line with our commitment to high-quality digital offerings for our students, we are exploring different ways of that industry and our students can engage such as virtual careers fairs and education sessions.National Careers Week is being held 18th – 24th May 2020 and there will be lots of opportunities for our Career Connect industry partners to get involved in the program.
You may like to deliver a webinar session to promote your upcoming Graduate Program recruitment, or simply talk with students about your career journey, a topic of interest or let students know about your organisation and the opportunities you might have coming up in future. These could be hosted via Zoom, GoTo Meeting or even a livestream via your website or Facebook page – whatever medium and platform you prefer.
