Respectful debate and discussion

At the heart of University learning is the idea of healthy and respectful discussions where ideas are shared and researched. Learning the skill of holding a healthy discussion takes time and practice. Too often people fail to listen and appreciate perspectives. Judgements cloud capacity to listen respectfully. Reactions become the norm setting off a chain of reactive outbursts.

Very easily, people can feel isolated, threatened and no longer safe to express views. It also means that not all views should be expressed at all times. This is part of learning the skill of healthy and respectful discussion. A series of interviews with academic staff cover these key questions.

Remember, if you feel unsafe in a discussion or debate, speak with your tutor/lecturer or with another member of staff who can assist.
