External scholarships

Once you have applied for University of Tasmania scholarships, remember to check out the external scholarships you may be eligible for.

External scholarships are offered by generous organisations outside the University. They can give you extra financial support to focus on your studies. Applications for these scholarships are made directly to individual organisations.

In some cases, you may receive both a University of Tasmania scholarship and an external scholarship. Click below to learn more about each opportunity.

Merit scholarships

A merit scholarship is assessed based on a students academic achievement.

Scholarship recipients will be exceptional people, chosen for their ability to make a difference to Australia’s future. A bespoke Leadership Development Program designed to foster potential of emerging leaders by building on your unique strengths and developing capabilities for success. It includes two residentials during the nine-month program.

The Rhodes Scholarships are postgraduate awards supporting outstanding all-round students to study at the University of Oxford. The Rhodes Scholarships are open to students from all disciplines. Each year, there are nine Scholarships available in Australia (including one offered by each state). Successful candidates are chosen on the basis of exceptional intellect, character, leadership, and commitment to service. The scholarships cover all University and College fees, a personal stipend and one economy class airfare to Oxford at the start of the Scholarship, as well as an economy flight back to the student's home country at the conclusion of the Scholarship.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship foreign exchange scholarship program of the United States of America, aimed at increasing binational research collaboration, cultural understanding, and the exchange of ideas. Since its establishment, the Fulbright Program has grown to become the largest educational exchange scholarship program in the world, operating in over 160 countries.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship programme offers scholarships to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. Students must have outstanding intellectual ability, a commitment to improving the lives of others and leadership potential.

John Monash scholarships support scholars to undertake a masters or doctoral degree at an overseas University of choice. For those who have completed or are about to complete an undergraduate degree at an Australian University, have shown excellence in their field, demonstrated leadership skills and have a vision for how they can contribute to a better Australia.

The Ramsay Postgraduate Scholarships were established through the generosity of the founder of the Ramsay Centre, Mr Paul Ramsay. Scholarships are open annually to Australian citizens to pursue graduate study abroad. The aim of the scholarships is to enable coursework and/or research to be undertaken at the world’s best universities and colleges for up to two years.

This scholarship is provided through the Zonta Club of Hobart Derwent Inc on behalf of Area 5 (Tasmania). This scholarship encourages women to pursue undergraduate and master's degrees in business and business related areas and overcome gender barriers from the classroom to the boardroom. The Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship is available to a female student enrolled in either an undergraduate Business degree (must have completed first year Business), or a Masters by coursework program in Business in Semester 1.

Youi want to back a full-time student who is close to finishing their studies and who has different skill sets, perspectives, or experiences to enable them to add to the uniqueness of what Youi do. To showcase your skills, you'll be required to write an essay about a specific topic and include answers to discussion questions within your analysis. The essay will have a maximum word count of 1,000 words, and the topic for this year's essay is related to Youi's website structure.

Shaw Contracting (Aust) Pty Ltd based in Launceston in Northern Tasmania is offering a scholarship for civil engineering students entering 3rd year in Semester 1, 2024. The scholarship is valued at $10,000 per year for up to two years and closes on Friday 15th September 2023.

The Advanced Navigation student grant program presents a chance for an ambitious and high-achieving engineering student to receive financial assistance and support in pursuing their aspiration to become an engineer.

Commonwealth Teaching Scholarships support new undergraduate and postgraduate teaching students to meet the costs of their study in exchange for teaching in government schools or government-run early learning settings for a period of time after graduating from their degree.

Scholarships of up to $40,000 per student are available for full-time undergraduate initial teacher education (ITE) students ($10,000 per year for a four-year qualification) and up to $20,000 for full-time postgraduate ITE students ($10,000 per year for a two‑year qualification).

Applications are strongly encouraged from school leavers and career changers who meet the eligibility criteria and who are high-achieving students (with an ATAR of 80 or above or equivalent academic result), First Nations peoples, people for whom English is an additional language or dialect, people with disability, people from regional, rural or remote locations, mid-career professionals or people from low socio-economic backgrounds, who aspire to a rewarding career in teaching.

Diversity scholarships

The Pinnacle Foundation provides scholarships to young LGBTIQ+ Australians who meet the following criteria – Australian citizen or permanent resident (proof required during application stage); at least 18 years of age and younger than 27 years of age have achieved good or reasonable scholastic results given your circumstances; will be undertaking full-time studies; and identify as a member of the LGBTIQ+ community.

The Australian Veterans' Children Assistance Trust manages a range of scholarships and bursaries for the children and grandchildren of Australian ex-serving men and women. To be eligible students must be: the child, stepchild, foster child, or grandchild of an Australian ex-serving veteran; an Australian citizen or permanent resident; enrolled, or planning to enrol in a full-time course at an Australian university, TAFE or registered training organisation in 2022; in receipt of, or eligible to receive, Centrelink payments including Youth Allowance, ABSTUDY, Austudy or an accepted means-tested Commonwealth government payment in 2022.

Larsen Jewellery recognises the need to support and educate young adults wishing to begin a career, or further their studies in jewellery, design or visual arts.
Applications are open to students applying, accepted to a relevant course or program at an Australian University or TAFE.

The Diamondport Jewellers Design Scholarship Program is for an individual who displays eagerness to learn all aspects of design with a particular interest in jewellery design.

The individual will also be offered opportunities to work with our team of designers and master jewellers.

Anania Jewellers is offering a scholarship of $7,000, to go towards the University or TAFE tuition fees of one individual, for either a jewellery or jewellery design related course, or a design or visual arts related course.

The American Australian Association provides scholarship and grant opportunities for Australians looking to study in the United States.  The scholarships and exchanges champion progress, creativity and expression, providing opportunities to young Australian leaders to undertake transformational study, research and professional or artistic development.  There are opportunities for Undergraduates and Graduates (Masters, Ph.D. or Postdoctoral Research) and funds range from US$5,000 to US$40,000.

Access scholarships

Access scholarships are awarded based on the financial needs of a student.

Applications are invited from eligible students from regional and remote Australia, enrolled in any course of study. Scholarships are awarded taking into consideration financial need, with priority assessment given to the following applicants: residential address is in an RA4 or RA5 category; identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander; identify as having a disability; chosen course relates to a field where there is low female representation; and/or affected by natural disasters such as drought, 2019-2020 bushfire and/or floods.

The Creative Arts Scholarships help eligible students in regional and remote areas of Australia access a bachelor's level degree in creative arts. The scholarships also give students, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, more opportunities towards a career in Australia’s vibrant creative arts industry.

The Seize the Day Educational Scholarships help with post-secondary education costs for young Tasmanians impacted by cancer. The scholarships give Tasmanians aged 16-25 undertaking post-secondary education who have been affected by a cancer diagnosis or the diagnosis or death of an immediate family member (parent/guardian, sibling, spouse/partner, child), you are eligible to apply.

The SSI Allianz Refugee Scholarships have been created to minimise the financial barriers experienced by people from a refugee or asylum seeker background as they participate in the NSW, VIC and QLD education system. If you are a student planning to study/currently studying at our Rozelle Campus in NSW, you may be eligible for this scholarship.

Did you finish Year 12 in 2022, and are you considering a move from regional or remote Australia to commence your tertiary studies? You might be eligible for a payment starting from $3,000 up to $5,000 from the Tertiary Access Payment (TAP).

Moving away from home can be expensive and the TAP helps ease the costs for eligible school leavers moving to study. The TAP can help pay for things like rent or bond for accommodation, household bills, groceries, textbooks, or other study supplies

At RJ Living, we are committed to helping students achieve their educational goals and providing students with the resources and support they need to succeed in their academic pursuits.

The RJ Living scholarship provides a one-time reward of $1,000 to pay for tuition, books, computers, room, and board, or any education-related expense.

This scholarship will be open to both undergrad and graduate students who are attending an accredited university within the Australia.

To be eligible for this scholarship, the student must submit a 500-word essay about one of the following topics:


1.The Role of Technology in Modern Furniture and Homeware Design
2.Sustainable Design in the Home: How Eco-Friendly Homewares are Changing the Way We Live  
3.The Art of Interior Design: How Furniture and Homewares Enhance the Aesthetics and Functionality of a Home

The Real Futures Grant provides the winner with a $5,000 grant and is awarded to a student studying for a certificate, diploma, degree or traineeship in one of the following fields: healthcare, medicine, business, or finance.

Tertiary Access Payment

The Tertiary Access Payment (TAP) is a one off payment of up to $5,000. It’s to help eligible students with the cost of moving to study. This is for study after you’ve finished year 12 or equivalent.
