Timothy Bowden was born and educated in Hobart, graduating from the University of Tasmania in Arts in 1960. He began his career in journalism with the Hobart Mercury, worked with the BBC's General Overseas Service in London as a radio producer with the Pacific Service, and enjoyed a long and successful career at the Australian Broadcasting Commission as a current affairs reporter, foreign correspondent and producer of radio and television documentaries.
Bowden has written eleven books, including One Crowded Hour (1987), a biography of photographer Neil Davis; the history of Australia's involvement with Antarctica, The Silence Calling (1997); and Spooling Through (2003), an irreverent memoir of his life in journalism. In 1997 the University of Tasmania awarded him an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters.
