Corporate entry: Chandlers Nursery

Details

William Charles Chandler (1863-1944) gained experience as an apprentice at the Hobart Botanical Gardens before in 1888 establishing a nursery on land in Park Street. Several years later he bought a neglected orchard in Queen Street, Sandy Bay and moved the nursery to its present site. Plants and seeds were imported from overseas and the nursery produced an extensive catalogue. The business continued to expand and in 1899 included a shop in the city selling plants, seeds and cut flowers.

William had three sons who worked in the business as soon as they left school. The family bought land at Kingston as the soil conditions were ideal for the field growing of rhododendrons, hydrangea and liliums. During the 1930s adjoining land in Sandy Bay was purchased to increase the size of the nursery. Chandlers Nursery now operates only from the Queen Street site and is run by Edward Charles (Ted) Chandler and his son Gregg.
