Details

Both his career and much of his life outside work were concerned with tourism in Tasmania, beginning at age seventeen as junior clerk with the Tasmanian Main Line Railway. Director of the Tasmanian Government Tourist Bureau from 1914 to 1941, he tirelessly promoted Tasmania as a tourist destination through lantern slide presentations, and published A short history of Tasmania (1937) and the delightful Tasmania by road and track (1952), a fitting testimony to his years of cycling and walking Tasmania's highways and byways. On his death, aged 99, he was acknowledged to have helped lay the foundations of tourism in Tasmania and was affectionately given the epithet, 'Father of Tasmanian Tourism'.
