Roy Sharrington Smith, architect, whose practice spanned the Arts and Crafts, Art Deco and Modernist eras, and who led the revival of public interest in historic conservation. He wrote numerous articles and two books, John Lee Archer (1962) being the first scholarly study of a Tasmanian colonial architect.
Born in Hobart, Smith served his articles with Rickards & Heyward, and was assistant architect to the Federal Capital Commission, 1925-30. After periods in Sydney, London and Dublin, he practised in Launceston from 1932. His Art Deco buildings Holyman House (1936) and the Launceston Gas Company, now Medibank (1940) are highlights of a distinguished domestic and commercial practice. Active in community and professional affairs, he played an important role in the formation of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects in 1930, and the National Trust.
